Since 2002, Sonoran Classic Builders (SCB) has built a reputation on relationships, craftsmanship, and a belief that every home should feel personal. Founded by a husband-and-wife team with roots in historical restoration and architecture, SCB was born from a desire to create homes that prioritized character and design over simply maximizing square footage.
Long before launching the company, Michael and Jeri McGwin spent time working on historical homes and embassies in Washington, D.C., an experience that continues to influence their appreciation for timeless architecture and meticulous craftsmanship today.

The company’s direction was shaped early on by two unexpected opportunities. Shortly after opening, they were approached by separate couples who needed help finishing homes abandoned by builders who had gone out of business. Stepping into those projects required more than construction expertise.
Those experiences helped solidify the philosophy that continues to guide the company: communication, accountability, and follow-through matter just as much as construction. SBC has expanded into luxury remodels, architecturally complex residences, and challenging hillside projects across Arizona.
Despite changing trends and technologies, one thing remains consistent: a hands-on, relationship-driven approach. Running a company as spouses also brings a unique dynamic. The pair credits communication, trust, and complementary strengths for helping the company grow while balancing family life.

“Running SBC as a husband-and-wife team has worked well because we each bring different strengths to the company while sharing the same values and vision,” Jeri said.
That partnership extends directly to clients. One partner may focus more heavily on design aesthetics and relationships while the other manages field operations and construction logistics, creating a collaborative experience from concept to completion. At the center of their philosophy is what they call a “relationship-first” approach — an idea that shapes everything from design meetings to final walkthroughs.
“We view every project as a partnership, not just a construction job,” Jeri said.
That philosophy starts with listening. Before floor plans are finalized or finishes selected, the team spends time understanding how clients live day-to-day, how they entertain, what inspires them, and how they want their spaces to function. Because no two projects — or families — are alike, customization has become a defining characteristic of the company’s work.
Some homes prioritize expansive indoor-outdoor entertaining spaces. Others center around wellness amenities, private retreats, or highly personalized design elements. In Arizona especially, the surrounding landscape often becomes part of the design itself.
That sensitivity to place has become especially important as Scottsdale’s luxury market has evolved. Over the last two decades, the company has watched homeowners shift toward more personalized spaces, cleaner architectural lines, indoor-outdoor living, and homes that reflect lifestyle rather than status alone.

Today’s buyers are also increasingly focused on wellness, home offices, sustainability, smart tech, and maximizing difficult lots — particularly hillside properties that require creative engineering and coordination. For SBC, those increasingly complex projects are part of the appeal.
“Hillside builds bring an entirely different level of complexity, and that’s an area where our experience truly becomes valuable,” Michael said. “Referrals and repeat clients have been such an important part of our growth because custom homebuilding is ultimately built on trust.”
After more than 20 years in business, that trust — paired with craftsmanship and personal connection — remains the foundation beneath every project they build. Learn more at Sonoran Classic Builders.
