Foundress Fridays: Danielle McGhee, Founder of Modern Reiki & Co-Owner of The Portal AZ

Danielle McGhee is the Founder of Modern Reiki & Co-Owner of The Portal AZ.

“At Modern Reiki, we train and certify aspiring Reiki practitioners, with the main focus of our Level 1 program on powerful personal and spiritual development. As the founder I also facilitate 1:1 Reiki sessions, group Reiki sessions and take this work to local businesses, events and retreats. The Portal AZ is a wellness studio in Scottsdale that my business partner, local Sound healer Sam Harper, and I created when we noticed a need in the community to focus on these deeply transformative and nourishing practices.”

AZF: Did you always know that you wanted to be entrepreneur? If not, when did you realize that it was the right path right for you?
DM: I knew from an early age that I didn’t necessarily fit into a pre-made mold and I always kind of marched to the beat of my own drum. After 10+ years in the corporate world, climbing a ladder and not quite loving the direction of where I was heading, it became incredibly obvious that I was supposed to be paving my own way.

AZF: What excites you most about being an entrepreneur?
DM: Knowing that I can follow my creative pings to teach and create programming that is new and different whenever inspiration strikes. I also love creating a community for folks who are searching for innovative, yet ancient, ways to come back to harmony and to know that their well-being is incredibly important.

AZF: What motivates you to keep going amidst of the challenges that come with being an entrepreneur?
DM: I always say that the work that I do now is what I would be doing no matter what. Even if everything collapsed, I would be sharing the potency and power that Reiki provides. I’m also incredibly blessed to have a relationship where I’m constantly being cheered on and supported. He always helps me see the bigger picture.

AZF: What is your “life motto”?
DM: “Just keep walking towards the light.”

AZF: What’s one piece advice you’d give to a young entrepreneur who is just starting out?
DM: Be messy. It’s never going to be perfect and if you spend all of your time striving for perfection, you’ll miss a wave of momentum. If something, an idea, has landed in your heart, it came to you for a reason. You have the unique skill sets, experiences, and life stories to bring that idea to life. There are no mistakes, just divine assignments.

AZF: Describe your perfect Saturday morning.
DM: Wake up with no alarm, warm cup of cacao before a hike with my guy and our pup and then a trip to the Farmer’s Market down the street from us.

AZF: How do you feel best supported?
DM: In terms of supporting myself, I know I need nourishing food, to move my body, to drink plenty of water, and to find stillness each and every day. I feel best supported by my community when they share the magic that we’re brewing up over at The Portal AZ and in the programs in Modern Reiki and being the walking embodiment of the work that we’re doing, spreading positivity in the community.
