Joan Dominique

Name: Joan Dominique
Age: 23, Libra (I know you were wondering.)
Title: Founder and Creative Director of Maison Joan Dominique
Married/Single: Happily Single!
Kids: No kids. But I have a French Bulldog named Zola, she’s the cutest.
City you live in: Paradise Valley and Manhattan in New York City, I travel back and forth between family and work!
A typical day in my life includes…
the beautiful thing about being an entrepreneur is that no two days are the same. There’s a never-ending to-do list. The hours are long but worthwhile.
I was born…
in North Scottsdale but raised in Paradise Valley. Close enough, right?
My favorite thing about Arizona…
shout out to AJ’s Fine Foods for the best iced tea. I’ve tried recreating it in my time in NYC but it was not the same. I might have done something wrong.
I’m listening to…
Mala Mía – Maluma, MIA (feat. Drake)- Bad Bunny…on repeat. All songs Reggaeton steal my heart. But I do have my moments where all I want to listen to are Frank Sinatra and Nina Simone.
My family…
is the best! My parents and my three sisters are the greatest support system that I could ever ask for.
If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be…
Steve Jobs. A dream CEO dinner. Jobs transformed so many industries through out of the box thinking. He had fought several hardships throughout his life; these are experiences that I would love to hear from his point of view.
One thing I cannot live without…
AirPods. This device transforms my everyday life. I am able to multitask like never before and my productivity levels increased immensely once I acquired them. I am taking business calls at the gym between sets and no one ever knows!
When I was younger, I wanted to be…
a fashion designer—my dream job never changed! As a second grader, we completed a project of discovering famous people born on our birthdays. My report was on Donna Karan, who was also born on October 2. Through that project, I discovered my passion for drawing clothing. That passion never left me. I wanted to follow Karan’s footsteps by attending Parsons the New School located in New York City and that’s exactly what I did.
I’m inspired by…
I love following the hashtag #transformationtuesday on Instagram because there are several women who post their before and after images of extreme weight loss. These women motivate me because it demonstrates their internal starvation for change in their lives. And this juxtaposition of images shows that they took charge of their lives and recorded how far they have come. There’s new stories everyday. It’s truly inspiring to me.
The one person who motivates me is…
my mother. She’s my best friend and a fellow entrepreneur. While we both have our ups and downs we will always have each other’s backs.
If I could change anything in the world, it would be…
I would take away that feeling when you stub your toe in the morning. It would make the world a better place.
The perfect day would be…
wake up in the morning, take Zola to the dog park, go to the gym, do some resistance training then go out with friends to a cool, new bar featuring some specialty cocktails. Vodka is my poison of choice.
My first job was…
an internship I secured during my summer during my high school years at Alice + Olivia in NYC. I was working as a technical footwear design intern—it was such a great experience.
My favorite escape…
Europe, always!
My life…
is a wild adventure. With the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.
I’m working on…
Maison Joan Dominique showing at Paris Fashion Week 19/20 with OFS. We are working diligently to create a menswear collection of coats. It is a flux between Bespoke and Contemporary Luxury Menswear.
Always…
stay curious.
Never…
have I ever broken a bone—fun fact!
Favorite Quote…
“Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence. But we rather have those because we acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is not an act but a habit.” -Aristotle
Biggest Dream…
I want to become a Vera Wang—not as a wedding dress designer—but as a designer. She is known for her wedding dresses but she dabbles in several industries through partnerships that focus on her as a designer with unique taste. Some of her collaborations include those with Crane & Co. and Lauderee.
My Pet Peeve(s)…
folding clothing. I have no problem doing laundry but when it comes to folding it…I struggle.
