Square One Concepts–the folks behind Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers, Wasted Grain and more–has announced that The Funky Monk will opening this spring in both Tempe and Tucson, the newest addition to its restaurant lineup. The restaurant will be a comfortable throwback spot with delicious food and, at night, psychedelic lounge vibe.
The Funky Monk is a creative take on Belgian monks known for their rich beer-making tradition dating back to the sixth century. (The figure is also a nod to Arizona’s Camelback Mountain rock formation, Praying Monk.) The interior will feature indoor-outdoor seating, bright patchwork seating, a full-service bar and a state-of-the-art sound system.
The highly anticipated menu features traditional American fare with a snappy twist, with dishes like a starter Nosh Board and stuffed mushrooms (pictured); for heartier fare, try the delicious pizzas and the elevated pasta selection (like the must-have 24 Karat Mac). To drink, the handcrafted cocktail program features a variety of mules, floats and signature drinks, some customized per location. The Tempe location offers ASU-themed drinks the Rising Sun and Devil’s Sunrise, a refreshing mix of Patron Tequila, Tangerine Red Bull and grenadine, while Tucson serves up The Funky Stuff, a red or blue vodka-based drink.
Hours of operation are Sunday through Thursday, from 12 p.m. to close; Friday and Saturday, from 12 p.m. to 2 a.m. Happy hour is Monday through Friday, 3 to 7 p.m.
