So, You Want To Be A Cool Girl?

Over the past couple of months, you may have noticed a new phrase we’ve been using to describe this effortless and fresh style popping up on the streets, in the magazines, and on some of our favorite models and celebrities–that is, cool-girl style. Not quite sure where or when this new moniker came to be, but we do love what it represents: looking uber stylish without looking like you tried too hard, feeling and looking chic in the most relaxed of ensembles, and eminating just a bit of fashion rebellion.

Need a few examples of this new breed of stylish lady? A few cool girls who may come to mind are Alexa Chung, Dree Hemmingway, Elle Fanning, and Emma Watson.

Let’s take some tips from each of our cool girls in order to discover how we too can become a cool girl.

Adding a more casual piece to your otherwise extremely conservative and chic ensemble. That’s how Alexa manages to pull off her too cool for school style. We love her ripped cut-off shorts in place of what would likely be a black pleated skirt.

Don’t have time to brush your hair in the morning? No worries, just run your fingers through those locks a few times and head out the door, because what we’ve learned from Dree Hemmingway is that a messy do will ensure that you don’t look like you tried to hard, and that your totally comfortable with your natural texture. Cool-girl style is all about confidence.

Elle Fanning reminds us that it is totally cool to play dress up… I mean isn’t that why we all love fashion in the first place, we can be whoever we want to be, whenever we want to be?

When in doubt, add a beenie and scarf. At least that seems to be Emma’s route. You have to admit it does look both effortless and intentional all at the same time, and isn’t that what being cool is all about?
