Matilda’s All Day Café is bringing a new dose of warmth, community, and culinary charm to downtown Phoenix this winter, setting up inside a beautifully reimagined 1914 bungalow in Roosevelt Row.

The woman-owned café, located on 6th Ave., promises a neighborhood-focused experience with offerings that span coffee, pastries, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and cocktails. Guests will enter through a grassy garden and front porch before discovering a service counter and bar area, two intimate dining rooms, a lounge with custom millwork, and a back patio perfect for both daytime gatherings and evening relaxation.

“Matilda’s is meant to feel familiar from the moment you walk in, warm, lived-in, and full of small, meaningful details,” Owner Devon McConville said. “Whether someone stops in for a morning coffee or meets friends at night for wine and snacks, our goal is a space that feels grounding, nostalgic, and welcoming.”
The café’s culinary program is led by Head Chef Matt Celaya, known for his pop-up Mas Amable, bringing a seasonal, approachable cooking style to the menu. A bar program complements the food offerings, with beer, wine, classic cocktails, and non-alcoholic options to suit every hour of the day.

Phoenix-based design studio Need To Know, co-founded by Carmen Tabatabay and Sophia Pappas, shaped the café’s interior, blending classic brasserie influences, vintage café culture, warm woods, nostalgic artwork, and playful objects to create a collected, lived-in aesthetic.
A standout feature is the hand-painted ceiling mural by artist Carlisle Burch, whose soft palette and narrative scenes add both warmth and personality to the bungalow.
“Designing Matilda’s with Devon felt like giving the original Matilda coffee truck a permanent home, one layered with history, charm, and enough soul to hold the community that’s grown around it,” Tabatabay said. “Every choice carries a piece of the story.”

Matilda’s builds on the nearly eight-year evolution of First Place Coffee, McConville’s beloved 1970s coffee truck, which cultivated a loyal, dog-friendly community known for approachable hospitality. The new café aims to carry that spirit forward, offering morning work sessions, casual lunches, golden-hour wine, themed nights, and future community-focused activations.
With its approachable menu, and community-driven ethos, Matilda’s All Day Café invites visitors to sip, dine, and linger at every hour of the day. For more, visit matildasallday.com or needtoknow.design.
