True Ranch Collection Invites Travelers to Trade Screens for Saddles

For travelers looking to return home with more than just photos and souvenirs, a growing trend is reshaping the vacation experience. Known as “skillcations,” these trips combine travel with hands-on learning, allowing guests to develop new skills, explore hobbies and immerse themselves in experiences.

At True Ranch Collection properties across Arizona, Wyoming and Montana, guests can do exactly that while embracing the spirit of the American West.

While horseback riding remains the centerpiece of the classic dude ranch vacation, today’s experiences offer more than scenic trail rides. Guests can learn the fundamentals of horsemanship, participate in cattle roundups, sharpen their aim through shooting and archery programs, tackle outdoor adventures and even master a few dance steps before heading home.

“Dude ranch vacations are about more than checking activities off a list – they’re about connecting with the traditions of the West, both old and new,” Managing Partner Russell True said. “Whether trying their hand at the basics of horsemanship or working a cattle roundup, or learning a new hobby like rock climbing, the goal is for guests to head back home relaxed and with a deeper appreciation for life on a ranch.”

Horseback riding is available and serves as the foundation of the experience. Riders as young as 5 can enjoy leisurely trail rides, while more experienced guests ages 8 and older can participate in faster rides.

Guided by knowledgeable wranglers, guests travel through landscapes ranging from Arizona desert canyons and cactus-studded terrain to mountain vistas, rivers and historic Western sites. Along the way, riders learn riding techniques, horse safety and the basics of working with their equine partners.

At Tombstone Monument Ranch & Cattle Co., guests can participate in spring and fall cattle roundups, helping drive cattle and assist with ranching tasks such as branding, ear tagging and calf banding. Meanwhile, Kay El Bar Guest Ranch and Circle Bar Ranch host The Cowboy Way program, where participants learn everything from catching and grooming horses to saddling, cattle work and rodeo-style skills.

Circle Bar Ranch’s Buckaroo Kids’ Program introduces children to horse care and riding fundamentals while teaching fun arena activities such as barrel racing and pole bending.

Western traditions also extend to shooting sports and archery. Depending on the ranch, guests can practice target shooting with .22 rifles, test their skills at clay pigeon shooting, try black powder rifles or explore 3D archery courses designed to mimic real-world outdoor environments. Younger visitors can participate through age-appropriate BB gun programs.

The learning opportunities don’t stop there. At Blackwater Creek Lodge & Guest Ranch, located near Yellowstone, guests can discover the region’s wildlife and natural history during guided hikes with experienced naturalists. Adventurous travelers can also learn the basics of navigating whitewater rapids on rafting excursions through some of the area’s most scenic waterways.

Back in Arizona, White Stallion Ranch offers another unique challenge: rock climbing. With routes suited for beginners, intermediate climbers and experienced adventurers alike, guests can learn climbing techniques while exploring rugged desert landscapes under the guidance of trained instructors.

As the sun sets, the educational experiences continue in more relaxed forms. Guests at Tombstone Monument Ranch can learn classic card games such as five-card draw and Texas hold ’em. At White Stallion Ranch, stargazing sessions provide an opportunity to learn about the night sky through telescopes, while Circle Bar Ranch keeps Western traditions alive through square dancing and line dancing lessons.

The appeal of these experiences lies in their ability to combine recreation with personal growth. Rather than simply observing a destination, travelers become active participants, gaining a deeper understanding of the landscape, culture and traditions that define the places they visit.

Whether guests leave with improved riding skills, newfound confidence on a climbing wall, a better understanding of ranch life or simply a few new dance moves, a stay at a True Ranch Collection property promises memories, and skills, that last. Learn more: True Ranch Collection.
