AZF: What is your “life motto”?
Make plans, but know when you need to deviate from them if needed. Work hard, celebrate small successes, learn from mistakes and try very hard not to repeat mistakes.
AZF: Did you always know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur? If not, when did you realize that it was the right path for you?
No, I was a professor of interior design for 15+ years at Iowa State University and Arizona State University. I enjoyed teaching and research, but even though I was in a creative field in the academy, I felt the need to create more and challenge myself in a business way. I knew it was the right path for me when I found myself in the studio creating art, figuring out pricing for a line of products and services, and knowing that there were few limitations on what my definition of success could be.

AZF: How do you feel best supported?
Showing up. It depends on the situation and can take several forms.
AZF: What motivates you to keep going amidst the challenges that come with being an entrepreneur?
Nothing worthwhile is ever easy.

AZF: Describe your perfect Saturday morning.
Sleeping an hour later than the usual weekday schedule. Going for a longer run or workout.
AZF: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a young entrepreneur who is just starting out?
Find a few good mentors. Be confident in your beliefs. You do you.
AZF: What excites you most about being an entrepreneur?
What excites me most about being an entrepreneur is that each day can be completely different from the previous one — there are unique problems to solve, new clients to help, or new products to develop and bring to market. I also love the balance of creativity versus quantitative skills needed to address the issue at hand.
