One of thousands of pets saved from suspected cruelty by Arizona Humane Society’s Animal Rescue and Cruelty Team each year, Sergio has been in and out of the care of the shelter since February of this year. When the sweet two-year-old was initially examined in the shelter’s trauma hospital, he originally was found to be healthy but unfortunately later came down with a puppy cold.

After being cleared from his cold, the cute cow-spotted pup was given extra attention from the Arizona Humane Society’s Behavior Team as he was very fearful from his previous experience with his family. After daily work to help him learn how to trust people, Sergio has now become an extremely loving and outgoing pup who is hoping to find a true forever home.

Now, Sergio is a very energetic pup who is looking for a family that loves going on walks, playing in the yard and may have a pup who matches his energy. As more and more pet owners in the community continue to face struggles due to housing instability, economic turmoil, job insecurity and more, the Arizona Humane Society has seen a great need for its owned pet foster programs including Project Home Away from Home. Adorable Payson and his family are just one example of those who have looked to this lifesaving program after his family unfortunately fell on hard times and in need of temporary placement for the sweet pup.

At five-years-young, the handsome Labrador Retriever is hoping for a loving Foster Hero that can help him while his family works to get on their feet. With no history of illness or injuries, this gorgeous doggo needs someone that can help him feel at home and perhaps lose a couple pounds to get to a healthier weight.

For one night, some of the NFL's biggest stars traded game-day uniforms for aprons, serving dinner, mixing drinks and entertaining guests at The Guest House Scottsdale during the third annual Celebrity Waiter Night. As the Arizona Humane Society continues to face ongoing capacity issues, the state’s largest animal welfare organization is calling on the community to support its homeless pets through adoption, fostering and volunteering. To help free up lifesaving kennel space, the organization will host a one-day adoption event where ALL pets have $0 adoption fees on Saturday, June 27, at all three of its adoption locations.

For pets like adorable Lyra, a six-month-old Cattle Dog, having space at the Arizona Humane Society allowed her life to be saved as she was transferred in from another shelter along with her eight littermates. This happened thanks to AHS’ New Hope program, which allows pets in need of medical care to be brought in from other rescues as most others are not equipped to help with those issues.

Lyra was treated for kennel cough and stomach issues and now is waiting for her forever home after all of her other littermates have been adopted. This cute pup would love a home that helps her get her energy out, lots of cuddles after a long day and time dedicated to training so she can learn new tricks.

At a glance today, no one would ever guess the strength and resilience sweet Loki possesses to still be here with us. A little over a month ago, the four-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier was brought to the Arizona Humane Society after a Good Samaritan found him in dire straits.

Upon arrival to the shelter, it was immediately clear that Loki had been tethered up using a thick plastic wire that he had become entangled in and chewed his way out of. Loki was immediately sedated and taken into the Arizona Humane Society’s trauma hospital where veterinarians found that the plastic-coated wire lead had wrapped twice around his neck along with his nylon collar. Both of which were deeply embedded and encompassed approximately 60% of Loki’s ventral cervical region.

Loki underwent surgery and subsequent daily medical procedures where his wounds were clipped, cleaned and fresh honey bandages were put on. Luckily, this sweet boy was found and treated in time but serves as a great reminder that tethering is not only dangerous due to the extreme weather of Arizona but can also be deadly when pets entangle themselves.

Hazel has been waiting far too long for her happy ending. While the average length of stay for dogs in the Arizona Humane Society’s care is just 12 days, Hazel has now been waiting more than 50 days for someone to see just how special she is. This 2-year-old female Rhodesian Ridgeback mix weighs in at a perfect 43 pounds—big enough for adventure, small enough for couch cuddles. 

Hazel is a true one-of-a-kind dog and a field trip and sleepover extraordinaire! During a recent sleepover with a volunteer, Hazel proved herself to be the perfect house guest. She's house-trained, super friendly with everyone she meets and knows her "sit" command. She offers the best of both worlds: playful when it's time for fun and cuddly when it's time to relax. 

Hazel even loved stopping for a pup cup! She is sweet and loyal, and she enjoys the company of kids, making her a wonderful companion for many different types of families. Whether it's a car ride, a hiking adventure, or a cozy night on the couch, Hazel is ready to be by your side.

The Arizona Humane Society is raising urgent concerns about a worsening pet overpopulation crisis in the Valley and beyond, as shelters continue to see record-breaking intake numbers and rising strain on resources. In 2025, the organization took in more than 25,000 dogs and cats - the highest intake in over a decade - and projects that number could rise to 28,000 animals in 2026 if intervention efforts are not expanded.

Officials say the surge reflects a combination of factors including the long-term impact of paused spay and neuter services during the COVID-19 pandemic, rising veterinary care costs and ongoing irresponsible breeding practices.

Across the country, shelters suspended routine sterilization procedures during 2020, a disruption that continues to have lasting effects. At the same time, veterinary costs have increased by approximately 40 percent, placing financial pressure on pet owners and, in some cases, leading to pet surrenders when families can no longer afford care. For comparison, Maricopa County shelters reported intake of approximately 9,000 pets last year alone, underscoring the scale of the growing regional challenge.

“The reality is that we cannot adopt our way out of this crisis,” Valley Philanthropist Ann Siner said. “The only true solution is spay and neuter. If these numbers continue to rise unchecked, more pets across Arizona will face euthanasia simply because there is nowhere for them to go.”

In response, Siner has pledged $600,000 to launch a matching donation campaign aimed at expanding spay and neuter access across the state. As part of the initiative, she will match individual donations of $1,000 or more up to the full $600,000 goal.

“It breaks my heart to see so many pets in need with nowhere to go, so I decided to give $600,000 and challenge people in Arizona to step up and help,” Siner said. 

The program will prioritize dogs weighing 40 pounds or more in zip codes with low sterilization rates, offering free spay and neuter vouchers to qualified pet owners in an effort to reduce unwanted litters and shelter intake.

“The Arizona Humane Society is so grateful for Ann’s long-time support and vision for spay/neuter as the most proactive way to end animal suffering,” said Lauren Martich, VP of Development for the organization. “Ann has generously supported us and spay/neuter programs for over 30 years in the Valley. Her commitment to animals is inspiring.”

AHS says the initiative is intended to spark statewide action to address the root causes of pet homelessness before shelters reach even greater capacity.
