As more and more pets continue to pour into Valley shelters, the Arizona Humane Society is expected to care for more than 28,000 sick, injured and abused pets this year alone. With specialized medical ICUs that care for injured animals with nowhere else to turn, pets like Dandelion and Her Wishes could not be saved without the community’s support.

The sweet two-year-old Australian Kelpie and her five beautiful pups were transferred to the Arizona Humane Society from another shelter in August after they were found as strays. Found to be healthy overall but in need of ongoing care, this adorable family has been in AHS’ Mutternity Suites while awaiting a loving foster home.

The Arizona Humane Society’s Mutternity Suites is a specialized ICU for nursing and pregnant mama dogs where they receive medical care until they are cleared to go with a Foster Hero. Currently, this area is completely full and cannot bring in more families in need until pups like Dandelion and Her Wishes are placed in a temporary home until her pups are old enough to be eating on their own.

Being an Arizona Humane Society Foster Hero is a lifesaving venture with cases that fit every family and lifestyle. By bringing in a foster pet(s), you allow the state’s largest animal welfare organization to continue caring for even more of our community’s sick, injured and abused pets by opening up much-needed kennel space. For more information on how to become a Foster Hero for adorable Dandelion and Her Wishes or any of AHS’ amazing pets in need of fostering, visit azhumane.org/foster to take the online orientation and apply.

At just 33 pounds, Uko is the perfect size for any lap and he definitely does not turn down a cuddle session! After being rescued from a situation where his previous owners could not provide the proper care he needed, the sweet two-year-old Labrador Retriever mix was originally brought into the Arizona Humane Society all the way back in June of this year.

At first, Uko was extremely shutdown, scared and untrusting of people. Additionally, the handsome pup was also found to be covered in ticks and in need of a dental to take out some cracked teeth. In no time, medical care and daily interactions with people who care about him had this cutie pie coming out of shell and showing his true personality.

Uko was quickly adopted but unfortunately returned recently due to wanting to be the center of attention in his home. Because of this, the energetic pup would do best as the only dog in the home where he can show off his adorable zoomies and have a dedicated spot on the couch for him to rest on next to his favorite people.

In an effort to get more pets into their forever homes, the Arizona Humane Society is hosting $0 adoption fees for ALL pets on Saturday, September 5th. Uko’s waived adoption fee includes his neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip, and a follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. Visit this handsome pup at the Arizona Humane Society's South Mountain Campus or learn more at azhumane.org/adopt to give him the loving forever home he deserves.

One look at Dozer and you would never know he is suffering from traumatic injuries as his tail has never stopped wagging! Rescued as an injured stray earlier this month, Dozer is a very handsome pup who is in need of a helping paw. The one-year-old Cane Corso is undergoing care in the Arizona Humane Society’s Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital after he was found as an injured stray wandering in a West Phoenix neighborhood.

Dozer was evaluated in the shelter where he was found to have a significant wound on his hind leg and a fractured pelvis, most likely from being hit by a car. Because of this, the sweet pup will need a foster home where he can be on strict crate rest while receiving medications, going on very short potty breaks and getting updated radiographs every four weeks until he is completely healed.

Being an Arizona Humane Society Foster Hero is a lifesaving venture with cases that fit every family and lifestyle.
After her owner sadly passed away in June of this year, Athena and another dog had nowhere else to turn. With no one else to care for them, they were rescued by the Arizona Humane Society and now this gorgeous five-year-old American Bulldog is still looking for her forever home.

Upon being transferred to the organization, Athena was found to have some irritation on her paw pads, a few worn teeth and some swelling of her back leg. With a few dental extractions behind her, the jubilant pup has healed nicely and hopes to find a forever home that allows her to be her energetic, outgoing self.

Athena has shown that she loves everyone she meets, getting attention and is a ham when it comes to showing off her tricks in exchange for some yummy treats. With endless booty wiggles, a big smile and an even bigger heart, it is a wonder this sweet girl is still at the shelter.

As a part of AHS’ ongoing Big Dog Adoption Special, Athena has a $0 adoption fee thanks to Hill’s Pet Nutrition. Athena’s waived adoption fee includes her spay surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip, and a follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital.
Betty Loves Showing Off Her Tricks!

In memory of an Arizona Humane Society alum, Jean Valjean, a senior black cat who sadly passed away from cancer, all black pets have $0 adoption fees now through August 28 thanks to an anonymous donor and adopter who has generously offered to sponsor adoption fees. Jean was found as an injured stray in 2018 and brought to the Arizona Humane Society where he was treated for wounds and corneal scarring. He spent his remaining golden years of life with his loving family in Phoenix.

Oftentimes, black pets like sweet Betty often spend longer on the adoption floor as they tend to be overlooked by potential adopters more than other pets. The 32-pound American Pit Bull mix was rescued by the Arizona Humane Society in July after her owner sadly passed away and there was no one else to care for her.

Betty is a kind soul who loves to get treats and would appreciate a family that allows her to adjust to her new home with lots of patience and positive reinforcement. As smart as she is cute, this golden eyed pup loves showing off how great she does on a leash and the tricks she knows including sit!

Betty’s waived adoption fee includes her spay surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip, and a follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital.
An unfortunate trend that seems to be on the rise in the Valley is pet abandonment. Whether due to eviction, not being able to afford a furry friend any longer or another major life change, the Arizona Humane Society’s Animal Rescue and Cruelty Team are sadly seeing more and more pets left behind.

This is such the case for adorable Charlie, a three-year-old Labrador Retriever mix who was found abandoned at a park tied to a palm tree in the middle of a sweltering June day. Thankfully, she was found before heat exhaustion could overcome her and was found to be a little underweight when evaluated in the shelter’s trauma hospital but otherwise pretty healthy.

In her time at the Arizona Humane Society, Charlie has shown she absolutely loves people and does great with kids but would do best as the only pup in her future forever home. It is very rare to see this cute pup without a tail wag or smile on her face as she is always having a great time showing off her tricks and exploring new places. This cutie would especially love a family that enjoys taking naps as much as she does after a long day!

In an effort to help more pets find homes, the Arizona Humane Society is hosting $0 adoptions for ALL pets on Saturday, August 8th.
