Did Cavewomen get fat? According to Esther Blum, a registered dietician and holistic nutritionist in New York, No. She wrote the book on it, literally: Cavewoman Don’t Get Fat, a Paleo manifesto singing the praises of turning the clocks back on our eating habits back to our Caveman cronies. Going Paleo means saying so long to anything our hunter-gatherer ancestors wouldn’t have consumed: no grains, dairy, beans, legumes, added sugars, processed oils, alcohol… NO FAST FOOD. Paleo staples include grass-fed meats, pastured poultry and eggs, fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts and seeds. And Blum makes a great point: Unprocessed foods like fresh fruits, veggies, lean meats and fish ALWAYS contain fewer calories than processed foods. She adds that our brains and bodies are designed to function best when they’re fueled largely by fats and proteins. So by eating Paleo you’ll sleep better, look better, feel better and perform better. That’s the Cliff Notes version; check out the book for the science behind it, plus plenty of fab recipes.
