2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid

Mazda has long held its well earned reputation for making fun, affordable vehicles. They were the company bold enough to put a spinning rotary engine in the 787B, which became the only Japanese manufactured race car to win the 24-hour Le Mans. They built the MX-5 Miata. Which many consider to be a near perfect roadster. That’s not even mentioning the long reign of the iconic RX-7. With history like that, it’s no wonder we have a certain expectation for everything with a Mazda badge on its nose.

For 2026, the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid delivers big in the name of improved fuel-economy. Sadly, the sacrifice to its lively, dynamic driving experience is more than a little noticeable. That’s in part due to the added weight of the hybrid set-up. It’s not to say the CX-50 has been completely sterilized though. There’s still plenty of fun to be had with handling that remains more engaging than most small SUV’s. The CVT transmission can drone on as it second-guesses its way through aggressive gear changes. The interior remains quality crafted, with a look and soft-touch feel that wouldn’t be out of place in a luxury SUV.

Whether or not the improved fuel economy will be enough to justify a little less liveliness will be a personal choice. The hybrid model is powered by a 2.5L four-cylinder engine, making 219 combined hp. All wheel drive is standard. City rating for fuel economy is an impressive 39 mpg’s. This aligns it with other popular SUV Hybrids like the Honda CR-V and and Toyota RAV4. Though these competitor models offer more interior space and cargo room.

At the tippy top of the model range is the Premium Plus model that I was lucky enough to enjoy. With the Premium trim package, you’ll be treated to a long list of luxurious add-ons. Heated and ventilated front seats that are comfortably built and leather trimmed. Wireless charging, Bose audio, every driving aide imaginable and more. The new CX-50 hasn’t completely abandoned Mazda’s mission of building fun, engaging vehicles, but fuel economy and practicality seem to be more the focus. For a small SUV, that probably makes more sense.
