Grocery Great: Amoretti’s Gourmet Icings

With Mother’s Day rapidly approaching, there is sure to be plenty of baking going on this weekend. (What mom doesn’t have a sweet tooth?) Because you are most likely strapped for time and won’t be able to whip up a from-scratch frosting, you might be turning to a pre-made icing. However, instead of just any old grocery store variety, give Mom something extra special to sink her teeth into: Amoretti’s Gourmet Icings.
Designed to meet the standards of professional pastry chefs, Amoretti’s Gourmet Icings dish up unique flavors and endless uses–from cakes and cupcakes, naturally, to fillings for cream puffs and pastry shells to drizzled (upon heating) over cake pops and waffles. To test them out, we whipped up some vanilla cupcakes and slathered on some of Amoretti’s Gourmet Icings’ more unique flavors: Salted Caramel, Red Velvet and Maple Bacon (available only online). (Other flavors include Fudge Brownie, Vanilla, Lemon, Strawberry and Orange Cream, plus many more.)
The icings were all thick and spread smoothly. Each cupcake needed only a small dollop to be coated evenly. After opening, the icing stays good in the fridge up to 30 days (we can’t wait to heat up the Salted Caramel and drizzle it on cinnamon rolls!) Containers are 12 ounces so there is a generous amount to save for a latter use. The colors were also rich, especially the dark burgundy Red Velvet. The flavor was chocolatey with a little extra sweetness. The Maple Bacon would be a good option to save for Father’s Day to complement Dad’s favorite after-dinner drinks; the icing was very smokey, yet sweet. The favorite was Salted Caramel, one of today’s trendiest flavors. Not too sweet, not to salty, it was the perfect flavor balance.
Amoretti Gourmet Icings are about $10 at Williams-Sonoma’s nationwide or www.amoretti.com.
