Phoenix’s Iconic Barrio Café Arrives in New York City

Barrio Café’s Tacos Camarón Baja is on the Wonder menu, featuring spice-rubbed shrimp, cabbage, habanero pico de gallo, guacamole and creamy rosarita sauce, served on your choice of tortilla with salsa verde.

Regional classics and menu highlights from Phoenix’s beloved Mexican restaurant Barrio Café can now be enjoyed all the way in New York City thanks to the new dine-in destination and food delivery service, Wonder.

Led by former CEO of Walmart, Marc Lore, Wonder is setting new standards for home dining by partnering with top chefs and iconic restaurants across the country to bring their menus to New York and eventually nationwide.

Through the Wonder app, diners can browse menus and order from multiple restaurants at each Wonder location for dine-in, pickup or delivery. A Wonder chef cooks each meal to order, while trusted couriers will deliver customers’ orders to their doors in minutes. Barrio Café will be one of 30 celebrated restaurants that diners can choose from.

“We are trying to bring the best of the best,” said a Wonder spokesperson in a statement. “That meant the best Mexican food with Esparza.”

Chef Silvana Salcido Esparza opened Barrio Café in 2002, bringing the Valley her unique, elevated versions of regional Mexican favorites that feature bold flavors and fresh ingredients. Her legendary dishes are now nationally recognized as some of the country’s best Mexican cuisine, making Chef Esparza one of the most iconic and influential chefs in Phoenix and beyond.

In addition to being named as a semifinalist for the national Outstanding Chef award by the James Beard foundation this year, Chef Esparza has been named a James Beard Best Chef Southwest semifinalist seven times and won the MLK Jr. service award in January 2022.

Wonder’s first New York City location on the Upper West Side now offers dishes from Esparza’s award-winning menu that can be enjoyed hot and straight out of the kitchen, just as they would at her restaurant in Phoenix. Spotlight dishes include Tacos Barbacoa, the signature Pomegranate Guacamole and Chips, Enchiladas Suizas, Tacos Camarón Baja and Churros.

Other renowned chefs that have partnered with Wonder to make their menus more accessible include José Andrés, Bobby Flay, Michael Symon, JJ Johnson and Mark Murphy.
