Title: Owner/CEO, because Event Space

Married/Single: married to my husband, Dave Sweet, for 35 ½ amazing years! We have literally grown up together. I would not be the person I am today if he hadn’t been there (and the vice versa is also true).

Kids: a boy and a girl, both married to amazing people, and two grand kiddos (boy-girl twins who are almost 4 years old).

City you live in: we lived in Ahwatukee for 14 years, then in Historic Downtown Phoenix and now in Paradise Valley.

A typical day in my life includes…

a cup of coffee in my PJ’s before ANYTHING else is done.

I was born…

in Tennessee.

My favorite thing about Arizona…

is the sky! So fully open and beautiful from sunrise to sunset. It’s a new painting every day.

I’m listening to…

silence. I love to take every private moment I can to just catch my breath and let my brain settle so I can get to a calm state. I do this in my car and at home. In fact, my husband and I will drive all the way to California without ever having music on!

My family…

is the BEST! We are close and united in our beliefs, values and goals in life. They are my treasure. And is not limited to our biology. We have supported an orphanage in Kenya since 2008 and have an “adopted” son, JoJo, who graduates from University in Kenya this year with a double major and is getting married.

If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be…

Princess Diana. I’m sure many of the females in my age group still feel connected and inspired by her and her children. All of us believing we could have been good friends if we ever had had the opportunity. I’d love to hear from her what her favorite moments in life were, what would she do with a “do over,” what was her proudest moment, what was her favorite meal, what was her biggest lesson, things girlfriends share and talk about. What advice would she give to me and the world today?

One thing I cannot live without…

flowers! I always say, flowers cover a multitude of sins. A deep love of all growing things was instilled in me from a very young age. I grew up on a farm playing in fields of white daisies and black-eye susans. My grandmother could put a stick in the ground and it would grow into something beautiful. My mom is the same way, and a little of her deep knowledge has worn off on me. My favorite flowers come from my own garden.

When I was younger, I wanted to be…

a wife and mom, period. One day when I was little, my grandmother asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. She said I told her I wanted to be a grandmother, I was SO right! I am fortunate to be all three today and I LOVE all three roles!

I’m inspired by…

seeing and watching things others do or create on their own. Humans are capable of amazing things, most of which I can’t do. From creating businesses from scratch (aka “Shark Tank”) or dancing (aka “So You Think You Can Dance”) or the art hanging in because, it’s ALL inspiring!

The one person who motivates me is…

Dave, my husband. He believes in me more than I do. It’s his encouragement that propels me every day. He challenges me to think outside the box, to speak up and to not let F.E.A.R. (false evidence appearing real) control my decisions/actions.

If I could change anything in the world, it would be…

respect and care for each other = kindness. Not just those who agree with you or are nice to you. That’s easy. But to respect and care for those who are not easy to be kind to.

The perfect day would be…

a rainy Sunday (after church) in Arizona with coffee, an audiobook and my knitting. Then, later in the day, family and friends coming over to eat burgers and hot dogs while watching the Arizona Cardinals beat the Seahawks.

My first job was…

besides babysitting, (which I LOVED) was at a family-owned sporting goods store as a sales associate. Retail got in my blood and never filtered out. I love helping people.

My favorite escape…

this time of year is Cambria, California. We discovered it by accident when a planned vacation spot was blocked by the severe flooding and erosion on Highway 1 last year. It is so peaceful, a respite from high temps, and the shop owners care about and support each other.

My life…

is beyond my imagination. I am eternally thankful for all that I have experienced and am blessed to “get to do,” — even the tough stuff that makes me grow.

I’m currently working on…

getting the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) certification for because. I already have it on our other business, automätik.

Always…

put others first. This is simple, but not usually easy.

Never…

be mean. Take a breath. You can’t undo words and actions.

Favorite Quote…

“When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.”

Biggest Dream…

to have multiple locations of because across the country, inspiring other businesses and individuals to be excellent while caring for others through the giving of their time, talent and treasure. Humans can be amazing and make a positive difference in the world. We just get in the way of ourselves.

My Pet Peeve(s)…

people throwing food out due to the “expiration” date without checking to see of it has really gone bad!
