Age: 73

Title: Chairman and CEO of Rowpar Pharmaceuticals, makers of the CloSYS premium brand of toothpaste, oral rinse and oral spray.

Married/Single: married

Kids: none

City you live in: Scottsdale

A typical day in my life includes…

“Bob” the bobcat setting off the security cams around the house, coffee on the patio watching the sun rise, connecting with new folks around the world on LinkedIn, lunch with the love of my life, laps in the pool after work, a glass of wine at sundown and great food and live music somewhere nearby.

I was born…

in Indianapolis, moved to California when I was 1 ½ years old, lived in San Bernardino and Redlands until middle school and Marin and San Francisco during high school and college (so both Smogland and Fogland).

My favorite thing about Arizona…

friendly, intelligent, interesting people plus great hikes, great food, wonderful days and outstanding sunsets.

I’m listening to…

Clarice Assad, Dave von Ronk, John Coltrane, Chris Botte, Reba McEntire, Greg Ward, Chassoun. Also, I am an audio book junkie on the way to and from work: Thinking, Fast and Slow.

My family…

mostly gone. My mother and family are in my heart and my thoughts always. My heart is warmed by the embrace of my wife’s family and their welcoming love.

If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be…

Malcolm Gladwell, Amy Chau, Fareed Zakaria and Barrack Obama – all around the table. Let’s add Zorro and Dr. Ruth to make it six!

One thing I cannot live without…

good wine, good weather and good friends. Okay, so that was three things.

When I was younger, I wanted to be…

a photographer, a historian, a trail guide and a teacher.

I’m inspired by…

people who get up each morning, wanting to make the world a better place. Each chapter in one’s life brings new inspirations, horizons and adventures.

The one person who motivates me is…

my wife, Barbara.

If I could change anything in the world, it would be…

how unkind people can be to one another. Our better angels would not have us killing members of our own species, regardless of cause. Anger is a personal reaction; we all are in control of it if we choose to me.

The perfect day would be…

hiking up a red rock canyon under a blue sky, exploring what is around the next corner.

My first job was…

running an elevator in a Copenhagen hotel for tips.

My favorite escape…

catching the next flight to an exotic location, one where I have not yet been. One that is a feast for the senses and challenges my thoughts.

My life…

has its own harmony, pace and balance now.

I’m currently working on…

new and better oral care. Our latest generation of CloSYS Toothpaste outperforms the market leaders, and CloSYS Oral Rinse is becoming the gold standard for fighting gum disease, preventing cavities, and having fresh breath.

Always…

walk down the street with a smile on your face. You will be pleased with how people greet you.

Never…

think shortcuts get you there faster. On the trail, shortcuts destroy switchbacks. In business, shortcuts destroy trust, business relationships and commerce. In marriage and family…there are no shortcuts.

Favorite Quote…

“People of integrity, by their very existence, rekindle the belief that as a people we can live above the level of moral squalor. We need that belief; a cynical community is a corrupt community.” – John W. Gardner

Biggest Dream…

everyone had their health, clean water, enough food and at least a sixth grade education. If this seems trivial, I suggest a trip to the third world to discover how fortunate we are.

My Pet Peeve(s)…

robo calls.
