Spring/Summer 2009 Trend: Nudes

One of my favorite spring/summer 2009 fashion trends of the season was the return of the nude-tone palette. Seen in dresses, skirts, tops and shoes all over the runway, the barely-there color has become a total smash.

Though the lack of color can be frightening to some, there’s actually a wide range of nude-tones that can be complimentary to just about any skin tone. You can wear a nude-tone piece with a bold and bright summer color or, if you dare, match some nude-colored items for a head-to-toe look.

This Shay Todd spaghetti maxi dress has a nice summer feel to it. It also shows how you can match an all-nude ensemble with nude-tone accessories too. The key here is to pick a complimentary but different shade of nude so you don’t look washed out in the same color all over. $350. Net-a-Porter.

A cream-colored sandal like this L.A.M.B. one from shopbop.com is a total wardrobe must-have. It’s a classic mainstay that will carry through season after season and can help break up the monotony of an outfit. I have a pair of nude-colored sandals that I sometimes pair with just a simple black dress to give the look more of a spring/summer feel. On sale for $185.

If you’re only allowing yourself one nude-tone shoe pick this season, I would opt for a pump like these Christian Louboutin pumps, versus a sandal. You can wear them with dresses and they’re good for the office too. $595. Net-a-Porter.

This Alexander Wang corset dress is just darling. While it isn’t all nude, I just wanted to show how adding some color, even black, is a nice way to dress the trend. $795. Net-a-Porter.

I’m a sucker for a wide-leg cream pant in the summer. It’s so resort-chic and makes me immediately want to dash to the beach. These Organic seersucker pants  would look great with black or a bright-colored top. And they’re 100% organic cotton too. $295. Shopbop.com.

This Alice & Olivia tiered ombre dress definietly harnesses the cream-palette trend. $484. Shopbop.com.

The all-nude look extends itself into dressier outfits too. This Rory Beca dress is a cute pick for cocktail hour. It’s a very clean and sophisticated look. If you’d like to inject some color into the outfit play around with some different types of accessories. $297. Shopbop.com.

I really really love this Vivienne Westwood corseted silk top. It’s shown on Net-a-Porter paired with black skinny capris. Personally, I’d go for a black skinny jean instead since the top is already assymetrical. It’s totally a glamtastic evening look. $4,175. Net-a-Porter.

  1. i have to be very careful with nudes, as they tend to wash me out – – but i love the slight pink tint

  2. perfect – finally a trend i like! i love light colors and soft nude tones. that white linen skirt i just bought is right in line here.
