If there’s one seasonal statement piece this time of year, it’s a Christmas sweater. Boohoo analyzed the monthly U.S. search volume for Christmas sweaters inspired by holiday movies to determine which movie-themed sweaters were the most sought after this season.
“Christmas movies are the ultimate way to get into the Christmas spirit,” said a Boohoo spokesperson. “With office parties, family photos and Christmas sweater competitions taking place over this time of year, it is exciting to see just how many of our most iconic and beloved movies influence our Christmas wardrobes and how many people want to get their hands on a festive-themed sweater.”
Here are the top five most popular Christmas sweaters that are inspired by some of the most classic holiday films:
1. The Grinch
The most popular holiday movie-themed Christmas sweater is inspired by none other than Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, with searches for the term ‘Grinch Christmas Sweater’ averaging at 4,000 times per month in the United States. The favorite green cartoon character first appeared on screen in December 1966 as a TV special on CBS before hitting the big screens in 2000 when Jim Carrey took on the role of the Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
2. Die Hard
The second most popular Christmas movie sweater is worn by Karl Vreski, portrayed by Alexander Godunov in Die Hard. Gremlins-inspired Christmas sweaters come in fourth place with ‘Gremlins Christmas Sweater’ averaging 1,250 searches per month in the U.S. Written by Home Alone director Chris Colombus, the comedy/horror film may be an unusual Christmas movie, but Gremlins presents valued messages during the holidays such as loyalty and kindness.
