So you’ve recently upgraded your mane with some luscious faux locks, now what? To extend the life of your extensions – whether they’re tape-ins, hand-tied, micro bead, or any other variety – it’s important to care for them correctly. Best of Our Valley winning hairstylist and extension expert, Jessica Ouaknine, is sharing her top tips on how to properly tend to your hair extensions at home. Azextensionsbyjess.com

Tip 1

Wash hair 2-3 times a week using a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. For a dose of much-needed moisture try this Oribe shampoo and conditioner.

Tip 2

Make sure to use a masque like this one once a week, applying from the middle of the hair to ends. Do not use conditioner near extension bonds as this will loosen them.

Tip 3

After washing a gently drying hair with a microfiber towel, always apply a leave-in conditioner like this one from mid-shaft to ends.

Tip 4

Brush hair gently with a board bristle option like this 2 to 3 times a day, starting from the bottom and working your way up.

Tip 5

Always apply a heat protectant like this one from mid-shaft to ends before putting any heat on hair.

Tip 6

Never go to bed with wet hair as it may result in matting or tangling.

Tip 7

Always style your hair in a loose ponytail or loose braid before bed or for workouts.

Tip 8

Avoid getting your hair in chlorine. If you do, always wet your hair, apply a leave-in conditioner, and put in a loose braid prior to getting in the pool.
