It’s Kitten Season! Inside the Life-Saving Nursery at Heidi’s Village

Each spring in Arizona, the Valley braces for something animal rescuers know all too well: kitten season.

As temperatures rise, thousands of kittens are born, many outside without protection or proper care. While stumbling upon a tiny kitten may seem heart-melting, the reality is more serious. Kittens under eight weeks old are incredibly fragile, and without specialized support, many simply will not survive.

Enter Heidi’s Village, a Phoenix-based nonprofit tackling the issue with an approach unlike anything else in the country.

Founded in 2020, the organization is home to the Smitten Kitten Nursery, the only facility of its kind in the country dedicated entirely to neonatal kittens from birth to eight weeks old, the stage when they are most vulnerable and require constant care.

Bottle feeding every few hours. Temperature regulation. Medical monitoring. These are just a few of the critical needs neonatal kittens have, and most shelters simply are not equipped to provide that level of attention. At Heidi’s Village, the nursery is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even on holidays so kittens receive the vital care they need to survive.

Each year, the organization saves more than 400 kittens who otherwise would die on the streets of Phoenix. And the impact continues to grow. In 2025 alone, Heidi’s Village provided 24/7 care for 670 kittens in the Smitten Kitten Nursery, supported 70 rescue partners and helped nearly 100 pets remain with their families through temporary care programs designed to keep animals out of overcrowded shelters.

But Heidi’s Village is not just about rescuing animals. It is about reshaping how animal welfare works in Arizona.

True to its name, the organization believes it takes a village. Heidi’s works to unite rescue organizations, share resources and inspire new solutions across the animal welfare community. Their Phoenix campus provides affordable, safe housing for rescue groups, a state-of-the-art on-site veterinary clinic and valuable behavioral insights that help match pets with the right families.

The result is a collaborative hub where multiple rescue groups can work together under one roof, creating a more efficient and compassionate system for saving animals.

While the Smitten Kitten Nursery may take center stage during kitten season, Heidi’s Village also cares for dogs and adult cats, many of whom are available for adoption. The goal is not just rescue but ensuring every animal has the best chance at finding the perfect forever home.

For Valley residents, there is one key message during kitten season. If you find a tiny kitten, do not immediately try to raise it yourself. Wait 4 to 6 hours to see if the mother cat returns if the kittens are under four weeks old, or up to 8 to 10 hours if they are older, provided they are not in immediate danger. If the kittens are clean, quiet and sleeping, they are likely being cared for by mom. If they are screaming, dirty or cold, intervention may be needed sooner.

Neonatal kittens require specialized care that most people simply cannot provide at home. Bringing them to Heidi’s Village ensures they receive professional attention during the most critical weeks of their lives.
