Everything You Need to Know About Microneedling

With summer finally coming to a close and cooler temps in our near future, it’s time to kick your skin back into shape before the Holidays arrive. With harsh rays from the sun, the dry Arizona heat, and toxins including pollution, your complexion needs a tune up every few months and fall is the perfect time to get your fix.

In the past, pricey and painful treatments like Fraxel and other laser options were the hot trend to restore skin. Now – there’s an alternate option called microneedling that’s quickly gaining popularity and it’s giving girls the skin they want without the pain, down time or price tag.

Microneedling is a skincare treatment that uses a pen-like device called a micropen which houses nine to 12 precisely spaced tiny needles in a cartridge. The micropen’s needles create invisible micro perforations on the skin (epidermis) and top layer of the dermis. As a result, skin shifts its natural repair mechanism into high gear and starts producing collagen and elastin to repair these micro-perforations. This self-repairing property of the skin renews the appearance of your complexion while activating cell regeneration.

What does microneedling do for skin?

As skin heals from the tiny needle pricks, smoother, healthier, more even looking skin appears. This means no more acne scars, stretch marks, dark spots and uneven skin tone. Microneedling also reduces wrinkles, improves skin texture and tone and makes skin look younger and firmer while reducing pore size.

Additionally, the micropen also creates micro-channels that allow topical gels, serums and creams to be absorbed more effectively, which enhances their effects and lets them target deeper layers of the skin.

How exactly does it work?

Before treatment, a numbing cream and thin layer of topical gel is applied to skin.  Next, in a single motion, the pen will be gently pressed on your skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered. Treatment usually takes 15-30 minutes, although time can vary depending on the size of treatment area.

The earliest form of micro-needling comes from ancient Chinese acupuncture. Nappage, a French skin rejuvenation technique that’s been around for 50 years. Making a comeback because of its skin-changing results, microneedling has recently come to the forefront of medical-grade skincare.

What parts of the body can be treated with microneedling?

Face, lips, neck, décolleté, arms, hands, legs, stomach and back.

What does it feel like? Does it hurt?

Even though needles sound a little scary, microneedling doesn’t hurt. The treatment feels similar to sandpaper being moved (lightly) across the skin. Some sections are a little more sensitive, but the speed of the rotating needle tip makes the treatment more comfortable. With numbing cream which is provided at time of treatment, the pain is minimal.

How long does it take?

15 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the treatment area.

Is there downtime?

There is no downtime to recover from the procedure. Immediately after the treatment, you will notice a bright redness, similar to sunburn, which typically diminishes greatly in four hours and is usually gone in 12 hours. Within 24 hours, your skin will be completely healed.

If possible, try not to use makeup the day of your treatment. If makeup is a must, only use mineral makeup for the first four to six hours after microneedling. Your normal makeup is fine the following day. Also, for about three days after treatment, use a very gentle cleanser and moisturizer (we sell a kit that is perfect for post-treatment!).

How long will it take for me to see results?

Patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin right after the treatment. A treatment that delivers results, visible changes to the skin develop over several weeks as your collagen rebuilds. Results continue to improve up to six months as collagen production continues.

Depending on your skin and desired results, patients require a varied number of treatments. If you are looking to kick breakouts to the curb and give your skin a healthy glow, you will most likely only need one treatment. For deep wrinkles, acne, advance photo aging or stretchmarks, six to eight sessions at six week intervals are recommended to see the best results.

Where can I get this done?

Not something that can be done by an amateur, you need an aesthetician who is a pro at microneedling.

Logan Colt, owner of Glow Goddess in Old Town Scottsdale has been a licensed esthetician for more than five years. A true beauty and skincare enthusiast, Logan continues her aesthetic education to offer the latest, greatest and most effective services from head to toe.

How much does microneedling cost?

A steal at $285 per single treatment, micropen treatments are a great alternative for girls who want to see results, but are on a budget. Compared to $1,000 to $2,000 for a laser treatment, microneedling is an affordable way to get the skin you want – without the downtime or lengthy treatments.
