Feel good about yourself, in more ways than one this holiday season. When you take part in this Saturday’s annual Toys for Tots Jingle Bell 5k (or 3.1-mile) run you will not only be sheading some holiday weight, but the event benefits the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation, a 63-year-old toy-donation charity.
Most runners dress up for the festivities and everyone is encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped child’s gift, which will be donated to the Toys for Tots. When you donate your toy, you will receive a raffle ticket (along with the great feeling of making a needy child’s Christmas) for a chance to win a prize from sporting goods stores. .
Test your mettle against the 4 Peaks Racing Santa, dress up, tie bells into your shoelaces, and help those in need this holiday season. If you beat Santa to the finish line, you will be auto-entered into the draw to win entry into all 4 Peaks Racing events in 2011!
The race begins at 9 a.m. at the Victory Lane Sports Park within the Adobe Dam Regional Park in Glendale. After your race (approximately 10 a.m.), awards will be given to the top three men and women overall, and within age groups from 5 to 80. Bring the kids to walk or run as well!
Admission is $25 before 6 p.m. this Friday and $30 on the day of the event.
“It’s about being able to help families in need,” said race organizer Jeremy Graham, of 4 Peaks Racing. “There are so many people out there who cannot provide their children with Christmas gifts.”
Bill Grein, a retired Marine and vice president of the Toys for Tots Foundation, says Outdoor races are popular for Toys for Tots, though they fall behind drop-off donations, store check-out donations (at retail businesses such as Toys “R” Us, Pier 1 and Build-A-Bear), golf tournaments and even mud runs, according to The Arizona Republic.
The national organization expects to raise $4 million by the end of this year, according to The Arizona Republic.
