Foundress Friday ✨ Meet Cassie Patris-Browne, Founder of Cassie PB Auctions & Company and Executive Director of Friends of the Children Phoenix.

By day, Cassie leads Friends of the Children Phoenix, pairing youth facing significant challenges with professional mentors who support them for 12+ years, no matter what. With a focus on long-term relationships and individualized support, the organization is helping youth build brighter futures, with 90% graduating from high school or earning a GED.

On weekends, Cassie trades her executive director role for a microphone as a benefit auctioneer, helping Arizona nonprofits raise critical funds for their missions. With nearly 30 years in the nonprofit sector, a background in fundraising strategy, and experience as an Arizona Cardinals Cheerleader, she brings together her passion for philanthropy, strategy and performing.

We asked Cassie, “How do you feel best supported?”

She responded, “I feel most supported by people who genuinely care, really listen and aren’t afraid to offer me a perspective I may not have considered. I especially appreciate the people who check in when I’m not asking for help—the ones who say, ‘What feels hardest right now?’ or ‘What’s going really well?’ Those unexpected check-ins mean a lot to me.”

This week: The History of Encanto Park 🌳

Encanto Park in Phoenix, Arizona, was developed between 1934 and 1938 as a major public recreation destination during the city’s early expansion. William G. Hartranft, the first president of Phoenix’s Parks and Recreation Board, envisioned an urban oasis inspired by San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and San Diego’s Balboa Park. The city acquired land for the park in 1934, and construction was supported by federal assistance through the Works Progress Administration.

Originally called Dorris-Norton Park, it was officially named Encanto Park in 1937. Its 222 acres featured winding lagoons, lush landscaping, picnic areas, playgrounds, and golf courses designed by renowned golf architect William P. Bell. Spanish Colonial Revival and Moderne-style buildings contributed to its distinctive character. Over subsequent decades, swimming, boating, fishing, and other recreational amenities expanded its appeal.

Today, Encanto Park remains one of Phoenix’s most treasured green spaces, preserving a historic vision of recreation, beauty, and community.

This week: The History of Pioneer & Military Memorial Park ⁠
⁠
The Pioneer and Military Memorial Park in downtown Phoenix preserves the stories of the city’s earliest settlers. Established beginning in 1884, the site originally consisted of seven separate cemeteries serving fraternal organizations and the growing community. The cemeteries operated until 1914, when burials within Phoenix city limits were prohibited.

Today, the park is the final resting place of an estimated 3,700 people, including notable pioneers Darrell Duppa, associated with naming Phoenix, William Hancock, an early civic leader, and Jacob Waltz, linked to the legend of the Lost Dutchman’s Mine. Many military veterans and community members are also buried there.

After decades of neglect, preservation efforts restored the historic grounds. Officially designated Pioneer and Military Memorial Park in 1988, the site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. It remains a valuable link to Phoenix’s early history. ✨

This week: The Arizona Territorial/State Capitol Building!⁠

Arizona State Capitol was built as Arizona’s Territorial Capitol after Phoenix became the territorial capital in 1889. Designed by architect James Riely Gordon, construction began in February 1899, using Arizona materials including malapai rock from Camelback Mountain, granite from South Mountain, and tuff from Yavapai County. The building was completed in 1900 and formally dedicated on February 25, 1901. ⁠

When Arizona achieved statehood on February 14, 1912, the building became the State Capitol. It housed the Legislature until 1960 and executive offices until 1974. After new government buildings were constructed, the historic Capitol was restored and reopened as the Arizona Capitol Museum in 1979. Today, its copper dome and Winged Victory weather vane remain iconic symbols of Arizona’s history and government. ⁠

The Capitol’s distinctive copper dome, topped by the Winged Victory statue, has become one of Arizona’s most recognizable landmarks. Inside, historic legislative chambers, artifacts, photographs, and exhibits tell the story of Arizona’s journey from territory to statehood. Today, the building serves as the Arizona Capitol Museum, preserving the state’s political heritage and helping visitors understand how Arizona’s government and identity developed.⁠
