One of Scottsdale’s best-kept culinary secrets can be found at what might be an unsuspecting place. Located adjacent to the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church off E. Cactus Road and N. Hayden Road, Heavenly Coffee House serves up some of the most delicious and authentic Greek baked goods in town; from spanakopita and tiropita to rice pudding and baklava. Make yourself at home with a freshly-brewed cup of Greek coffee or an energizing frappe, and stock up on imported products, like Kalamata olives, feta cheese, and more. Desserts are baked by staff and in-house volunteers, while all proceeds go to the church’s general operating fund. We caught up with Abby Hakim to learn more.

Tell us the story behind Heavenly Coffee House

Heavenly Coffee House started from a small group of parishioners that belong to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. Heavenly Coffee House is a great place where families and friends can meet throughout the week. The vision is to create an environment where parishioners, neighbors, and the community can gather for coffee and decadent pastries! Heavenly Coffee House is a ministry of the church and reflects our values of fellowship and community involvement.

Our popular baked goods include assorted biscotti, baklava, koulourakia, spanakopita and rice pudding. These are made on-premises and will remind you of your travels to the Greek islands, or better yet, give you a reason to add a trip to Greece to your bucket list! Kalamata olives, feta cheese, phyllo dough, orzo, pastichio (Greek pasta), and Nescafe coffee are some of the grocery items also available for purchase.

Any other items that are not to miss?

We brew a variety of specialty coffee, including lattes, frappes, and Greek coffee that pair with our flavorful baklava and assorted biscotti.

Is the coffee house offering anything special for the holidays?

Our OPA! Pie is a holiday feature that is baked in-house. This unique pie is our fusion twist of Greek baklava and galaktoboureko; it’s been wildly popular so far! We also feature cranberry- and gingerbread-flavored biscotti for the holiday season

What’s next for Heavenly Coffee House in 2022?!

As a ministry of the church, Heavenly Coffee House exists to promote and reinforce the values of our church—fellowship, serving our community, and offering a taste of Greek culture. New menu items, culture events, and longer hours are on deck for 2022. We also just completed our “plaka,” the name of a famous neighborhood in Athens and used to describe a beautiful outside meeting area. Now that the weather has cooled, patrons can enjoy a cup of coffee in the middle of our very own plaka.

Feel free to add anything else!

We also sell artisan breads by Mediterra Bakery. Every pastry and baked good is baked in-house and made from scratch to give our customers a taste of Greece.

Heavenly Coffee House is open Monday through Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon; and every Sunday after service. Click here to learn more.
