How to Dress Professionally in the Scorching Arizona Heat

Dressing professionally during the blistering Arizona summer is tricky. With temps hitting the triple digits, it’s only natural to want to live in sundresses, shorts and crop tops all summer. However, when it comes to dressing for the office or a professional event, it becomes a calculated balance of how much skin to show and what fabrics work best in the sweltering heat. Being home to such major retailers as H&M, Calypso and Carole’s Couture, Alison Goodman with Scottsdale Quarter shows us some outfits that will have you looking professional and on trend without losing your cool.

CALYPSO Summer dressingNothing says summer like a bright, bold color and this flowy sheath from CALYPSO is right on target. The embezzled neckline and sleeves along with a slim, metallic clutch make this easy-breezy frock work-appropriate. Just add a pair of strappy metallic gladiator sandals and you’re out the door.

Carole's 1- Summer dressing

Well, hello retro! In a shape that’s femininity at its finest, this little striped number from Carole’s Couture could very well be the perfect dress. Cotton fabric and an A-line skirt mean you’ll stay cool when outdoors in the summer heat. Is the A/C on full blast in your office? Add a lightweight black cardigan when inside.

Carole's 2- Summer dressing

Diane von Furstenburg is virtually synonymous with effortless dressing and in a new spin on her infamous wrap dress, this short-sleeved one features a ruching side-wrap to showcase an enviable waist. When paired with classic stilettos, it’ll be your work uniform of Summer 2014. I recommend a nude pair: let the pattern stand on its own. Available at Carole’s Couture.

EDIT - CALYPSO Summer dressing 2

Let’s be honest: no one wants to put on a pair of jeans when temps pass 100 degrees, so what do you do when your office has casual Friday’s? CALYPSO has your answer: a pair of army-green cargo ankle-length capris. Boy-inspired pants meet girlie chic when paired with a sparkly, sequined hot pink tee. Add metallic espadrilles to up the feminine quotient.

EDIT - H & M 1 - Summer dressing

H&M shows us the newest version of a summertime “suit.” A white boyfriend blazer is perfect when in air conditioning, but take that layer off as soon as you see the sun. A lightweight silk ruffled tank adds a touch of prettiness to the boxy blazer and you just can’t go wrong with always-flattering black slim pants. The best part about this outfit? Each piece can be worn on its own to create a whole new ensemble.

EDIT - H & M 2 - Summer dressing

No woman should be without a go-to LBD and H&M has a classic, form-fitting style that will never be out of fashion. When paired with a white and black striped slim blazer, you’re office-appropriate in the best of preppie ways. Add a pair of sling-back peep-toe booties as shown here – when you head to happy hour, the blazer comes off and you’re perfectly dressed for cocktails.
