Arizona is One of the Luckiest States to Win the Lottery

Are you feeling lucky? If you’re an Arizonan, chances are the odds are in your favor. 

New data shows that Arizona is the ninth luckiest state in the U.S. when it comes to Powerball winners. Overall, Arizona has a luckiness score of 8.72/10 based on findings by Slot Tracker.

With 14 Powerball winners, Arizona sits between Florida and the three-way tie for tenth between Kanasa, New York and California. The total earnings of Arizona’s winners rings in at over $900 million. 

Since 2000, there have been three Powerball winners in Arizona who won at least $100 million each. The luckiest Arizona winner, Matthew Good, won $587.5 million after buying a lottery ticket at a Fountain Hills 4 Sons convenience store in 2012. The most recent winning ticket of $473.1 million went unclaimed from a QuikTrip in Gilbert. 

When winnings are unclaimed, the funds are added back into the prize fund. A portion of the unclaimed money goes to support the Court Appointed Special Advocates program, which trains appointed volunteers to speak on behalf of abused and neglected children in court proceedings. The unclaimed funds also support the Tribal College Dual Enrollment Fund to give Native American students in Arizona the opportunity to take a college course for both high school and college credit.

Since the Powerball started in 1992, there have been a total of 404 winners with the highest jackpot totaling $2.04 billion. Powerball is played in 45 U.S. states as well as Puerto Rico, the U.S Virgin Islands and Washington, D.C. Arizona started participating in the Powerball drawings in 1994.
