What began as a summer experiment is now evolving into a full-blown theatrical romance. Due to overwhelming demand and consistently sold-out performances, Drunk Shakespeare is extending its riotous and unpredictable take on Romeo & Juliet in Phoenix through September 27, 2025.
This offbeat production flips the script on traditional Shakespeare with one twist: one actor takes five shots of alcohol before stepping onstage to perform. Meanwhile, a troupe of mostly sober professionals tries—often unsuccessfully—to keep the performance from completely unraveling. The result is a chaotic, side-splitting blend of Shakespearean drama, improvisation, stand-up comedy, and audience interaction.
“This show proves you don’t have to be a theatre buff to love Shakespeare—especially when there’s cocktails involved and the Capulets are quoting Taylor Swift,” Producer David Hudson said.
Think sword fights, love sonnets, dance-offs, and a steady stream of pop culture references all packed into a single night of spontaneous theatre. No two performances are the same, and that unpredictability is exactly what has made Drunk Shakespeare a hit with Phoenix audiences.
Originally launched as a comedic experiment, Drunk Shakespeare has grown into a cult favorite across several cities. It’s a critically acclaimed theatrical experience that walks the line between high art and pure chaos. By combining a Shakespearean masterpiece with alcohol-fueled antics, the show manages to both honor and upend the Bard’s legacy in one hilarious evening.
Performances continue weekly at The Rose Theatre. With dates added through September 27, audiences have more opportunities to catch this irreverent take on one of literature’s most tragic love stories.
