Beat the Arizona Heat with Scottsdale’s Free Indoor Walking Club

When summer temperatures soar into the triple digits, sticking to an outdoor walking routine can be a challenge. That’s why Blue Zones Project Scottsdale is inviting residents indoors for a free weekly walking series that combines exercise with one of the most important ingredients for long-term well-being: connection.

The Indoor Walking Moai, held Thursday mornings at Scottsdale Fashion Square, offers participants a comfortable place to stay active while building friendships that can extend beyond the 10-week program. Inspired by the concept of a moai from Japan, a walking moai brings together a group of people who support one another through a shared activity.

“Indoor Walking Moai is simple on purpose,” says Sarah Kearney, executive director of Blue Zones Project Scottsdale. “People come to walk, but what often happens is bigger than that. They start talking, they recognize each other week after week, and real friendships begin to form. That kind of connection matters, especially when so many people are craving community.”

Participants gather each Thursday morning outside Capital One Café before splitting into walking groups based on pace. Most walkers complete two or three laps around the mall, enjoying about 45 minutes of indoor exercise in an air-conditioned environment that’s welcoming to a variety of fitness levels.

The event is free and open to the public, with advance registration encouraged. First-time participants receive a complimentary Blue Zones T-shirt, and everyone is invited to enjoy free coffee from Capital One Café after the walk. The events are built on the success of last year’s inaugural program, which inspired many participants to continue meeting for regular walks throughout the week.

What began as a wellness initiative has grown into a genuine community, with many walkers forming friendships that extend beyond the mall. For Kearney, that’s exactly the point.

“Loneliness and isolation are real issues locally and across the country,” she says. “In Scottsdale, about one in three residents have no one or only one person they can call in a time of need. A 10-week moai gives people time to move, talk together and create the kinds of relationships that can support well-being.”

Beyond encouraging regular movement, the program also supports Scottsdale’s efforts to become a certified Blue Zones Community®, an initiative focused on improving community well-being through healthier environments, policies and social connections.

Whether you’re looking to maintain your fitness routine during the hottest months of the year, meet new people or simply enjoy a morning stroll in air-conditioned comfort, the Indoor Walking Moai offers an easy way to do just that. Participants are encouraged to attend all 10 weeks to experience the full benefits of the program, but drop-ins are always welcome. Learn more at fashionsquare.com.
