The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern, Auberge Resorts Collection Opens as Reimagined Historic Resort

The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern, a legend of California’s Santa Ynez Valley since 1886, has reopened as a part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, offering new, luxurious accommodations, amenities and experiences, while preserving the rich, authentic history and spirit that the historic landmark debuted over a century ago.

“We are delighted to open the doors to The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern and officially welcome the property to the Auberge family today,” says Auberge Resorts Collection President and CEO Craig Reid. “Our owners, Brian Strange and Deepak Kamra, had a vision to create a hotel that is true to the heritage of this historic property and embraces the local community. The result is a resort that celebrates the soul, character and history that has made Mattei’s an icon in the area since the 1800s and yet feels so relevant for today’s discerning traveler. It has been a pleasure helping Brian and Deepak bring their vision to life and we could not be more excited to welcome the community and travelers from near and far to this one-of-a-kind property in the charming town of Los Olivos.”

Original buildings, including the tavern and a handful of original cottages that once welcomed pioneers and settlers, have been thoughtfully restored and complemented by newly-built structures that feature modernized elements as well as historic details. Exposed wooden beams, restored wainscoting, unlacquered brass fixtures, vintage furnishings and fireplaces are just some of the fundamental characteristics of each new cottage.

The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern will once again serve as a destination dining experience with the resort’s signature restaurant, Tavern, which features an elevated, chef-driven menu that incorporates seasonal ingredients harvested from the on-site garden and local California farms. Resort dining also includes The Shed’s Mediterranean-inspired poolside menu, the European-style coffee bar and bakery Felix Feed & Coffee, the Asian-inspired Gin’s Tap Bar and Mattei’s Tavern bar featuring a curated selection of historically-driven craft cocktails.

In addition to the one-of-a-kind activities the resort and its surroundings offer—including tours of the finest local wineries, cycling through back vineyard roads and immersive culinary programs alongside Executive Chef Rhoda Magbitang—guests can also discover holistic wellness experiences at The Cottage, opening in March, and The Lavender Barn, an Auberge Spa, opening Summer 2023.

“I am incredibly proud of the dynamic and talented team who have brought this vision to life, while honoring the history of Mattei’s and infusing it with their own spirit and passion,” says Dave Elcon, general manager of The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern, Auberge Resorts Collection. “Mattei’s Tavern has always been a celebrated social hub in the community and we are excited to honor its history and century old memories while creating new ones.”
