Hotel del Coronado to Transform into “A Holiday in Oz”

This season, Hotel del Coronado will enchant visitors with an immersive celebration rooted in history, fantasy, and coastal elegance. The theme for its 2025 holiday experience is “A Holiday in Oz,” a tribute to the resort’s real-life connection with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum.

Between 1904 and 1917, Baum frequently stayed at The Del and found inspiration in its storied architecture and serene ocean views. It was during these stays that he penned several books from the Oz series, including Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz and The Emerald City of Oz. That same imagination now forms the basis of the hotel’s holiday transformation, with themed décor, immersive experiences, and literary nods.

At the heart of this year’s festivities is the newly restored Victorian Garden Courtyard, which has been transformed into a glowing “Tinsel Trail to Oz.”

A projected yellow brick road winds through glowing dandelions, illuminated poppies, and four soaring 12-foot Christmas trees, each inspired by Baum’s characters. Guests can stroll the trail with a holiday cocktail from the Emerald Bar and learn more about Baum’s legacy.

“The Del has always been a place of magic, both real and imagined,” General Manager Harold Rapoza said. “This year, we’re inviting guests to step into the pages of a story that began right here, on our very shores, and continues to inspire wonder across generations.”

One of the most anticipated returns is Skating by the Sea®, The Del’s beachfront ice rink that overlooks the Pacific. With the hotel’s iconic red turret in the backdrop and twinkling lights above, it offers a surreal take on a winter tradition. A portion of proceeds from this attraction will benefit Make-A-Wish® San Diego, continuing the resort’s commitment to giving back during the season of giving.

In the evenings, guests can enjoy the reimagined “Wonder of Oz” Lightshow Spectacular on the Founders Lawn. The free, family-friendly event features nightly projections and music inspired by the world of Oz, all set around the famed 1904 Norfolk Pine. Beachside Igloos offer a cozy coastal retreat complete with fire pits, s’mores, and dedicated service, while Frostbite, an elevated rink-side lounge, provides a chic spot to enjoy festive cocktails and gourmet bites with front-row views of the action.

Guests can also indulge in elegant dining experiences throughout the season. The iconic Crown Room – featuring chandeliers designed by Baum – will host Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas Eve supper, and Christmas Day brunch. This year also features a Victorian Tea service, offering a nostalgic step back in time with teas, sweets, and live music in a setting that exudes turn-of-the-century charm.

The hotel’s massive restoration has returned many of its historic spaces to their former glory, including the Victorian guestrooms, lobby, and original frescoes in the Ocean Ballroom. Overnight guests can take advantage of the Holiday Escape Package, which includes resort credits and priority access.

Celebrations at Hotel del Coronado begin November 21, 2025, and run through January 4, 2026. For reservations and full holiday programming, visit hoteldel.com.
