Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon Unveils Stunning Renovations

The Deluxe Park View Room at Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon captures the spirit of the 1950s while offering scenic views

In Lisbon, Portugal, threads of the capital city’s rich history are ever so seamlessly woven into the present day—whether it’s a former palace transformed into a modern living space, an old monastery that’s now a bustling restaurant, or storefronts decorated with colorful azulejos (hand-painted tiles that often date back to the 15th century), the city has mastered the art of time by acknowledging its past to look forward to a vibrant future.

Taking a cue is the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon, which recently unveiled stunning renovations across the property that echo the hotel’s storied 60-plus-year history.

Tasked with refreshing the space, Artur Miranda and Jacques Bec of Portuguese architecture studio OITOEMPONTO gleaned inspiration from their own memories at the renowned hotel, and also referenced archival photography from the 1950s, exhibiting a singular approach to reimagine the “past for the present.”

The refashioned result shows off beautifully appointed Fifties-style guest rooms and suites where no stone is left unturned. Chairs, lamps and wide headboards, for example, are all re-editions of the originals, while the stylized wave design seen on the in-room carpets mirror the elegant staircase tapestry that greets visitors near the Ritz Bar on the ground floor that also boasts a brand new terrace and external bar.

Guests will be further delighted with the addition of a heated outdoor pool with underwater music, while art lovers will enjoy discovering an eclectic mix of Portuguese contemporary art, including over 1,000 sculptures, paintings and tapestries, from one of the country’s largest privately-owned collections throughout the hotel grounds where classic Art Deco meets elaborate Louis XVI style. A complimentary iPad app is also available to serve as an educational tour guide.

One thing remains unchanged for the better, however, thanks to the Four Seasons Lisbon’s central location in the heart of the city’s seven hills: unparalleled views. After taking in sweeping panoramic sights from one of the many private terraces or the sprawling rooftop gym—including the jacaranda-lined streets of Parque Eduardo VII and the medieval São Jorge Castle, stretching all the way to the Tagus River downtown—it’s easy to see why the Four Seasons Hotel Ritz claims Lisbon’s most iconic address.
