The iconic Atari brand has just announced a deal with GSD Group to acquire the rights to build video game-themed Atari Hotels in the United States. Led by founder Shelly Murphy and partner Napoleon Smith III, GSD will work alongside True North Studio, a leading Phoenix-based real estate developer, to develop the first location, breaking ground in Phoenix mid-2020. A potential Downtown Phoenix location is currently being scouted by the team.
Locals may know Shelly Murphy from her DesTechAZ event and Steve Wozniak’s Woz Innovation Foundation, and Napoleon Smith III as the producer of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, as well as the Grand Prix of Scottsdale.
“We are thrilled to partner with GSD Group and True North Studio to build the first-ever Atari branded hotels across the United States. Together we’ll build a space that will be much more than just a place to stay. Atari is an iconic global brand that resonates with people of all ages, countries, cultures and ethnic backgrounds and we cannot wait for our fans and their families to enjoy this new hotel concept.”Fred Chesnais, CEO, Atari
A first-of-its-kind, the unique hospitality concept will feature unique, fully immersive experiences for all ages and gaming abilities, including the latest in VR and AR (Visual and Augmented Reality), with some even featuring state-of-the-art venues and studios to accommodate esports events. The full-service hotel will also feature arcade bars and fine dining outlets.
“When creating this brand-new hotel concept, we knew that Atari would be the perfect way to give guests the ‘nostalgic and retro meets modern’ look and feel we were going for. Let’s face it, how cool will it be to stay inside an Atari?!”Napoleon Smith III
Additional hotels are being planned for Las Vegas, Denver, Chicago, Austin, Seattle, San Francisco, and San Jose.
