Tips for Buying Lighting For Your Home

In the market for some new lighting for your home? Here, Erica Islas, interior designer with Lamps Plus, gives seven lamp-buying tips that will light up your life, for sure.

The more the merrier.

Lighting is important in making spaces appear more expansive. Always have more than one light source in small spaces and layer.

Table lamps can work in big spaces, too.

When planning lighting for a larger room, like a dining room, most people go with ceiling lighting fixtures. But a table lamp creates a certain intimate, café-like ambiance for dining. Table lamps are especially effective when you put them on a buffet or console table.

Pair light with dark.

Dark colors also work well in small spaces. Lighten up the dark walls with brighter furniture and layer with several lighting sources.

Use a set of lamps for certain parts of the home.

When deciding on a table lamp, consider the room’s setup. Lamp sets offer a unified look for entryways, bedrooms and living areas.

Different levels of lighting work for different rooms.

If you want to light your way at night, consider buying a table lamp with a nightlight. They offer ambient and overall lighting when all features are on, and accent lighting when just the nightlight feature is being used.

Consider a table’s lamps features.

A lamp with double pull chains gives you two options for lighting if you want to read, watch TV or illuminate the whole room. Decorating for an office? You may want to consider a lamp with a USB port.

Consider the eye-level rule.

When placing a lamp next to a sofa, the bottom of the shade should line up with eye levels. The same goes for a chair to ensure the light isn’t shining in your eyes. When placing a table next to a bed, the bottom of the shade should line up with chin level.
