New York Fashion Week: DVF, Alice + Olivia, Beckham

Happy Valentines Day!

New York Fashion Week is nearly over and there is oh so much to talk about… I mean the color combinations have been amazing, the excellent use of leather, and I really feel like we are finally seeing something different from the past few seasons. Here are a few designers I think are doing some if not all of these things well.

Before we get into all the fabulous looks can we talk about how great Victoria Beckham looked at her show? It is hard to believe she had one let alone four kids! This extraordinary after-pregnancy body is what inspired her fall collection, “I’m not pregnant anymore; these are the dresses I want to wear now.” No doubt Mrs. Beckham could have walked the runway herself.

The collection is all Victoria and all fabulous—slimming silhouettes in jersey and cotton were surprisingly sporty, attributed to Beckham’s son Romeo’s baseball outfits. Colors ranged from olive to bright red and ending in black. I personally loved the collared looks, girlish skirts, and those double-wrapped, skinny, leather belts will no doubt be huge come fall.

Diane Von Furstenberg gave us burgundy/chocolatey-wine/Bordeaux (which ever name you prefer) and we love it! The first, off the shoulder, ruched, dress is seductive and mysterious—clingy yet modest and sets the tone for the rest of the collection. DVF also came through with some amazing belts in gold, red, and our multi-name color—I’m thinking my belt wardrobe will be growing this year.

The color palette was daring: reds, wines, blush pinks, teals and the list goes on…. And the prints… there could be no DVF show without prints: intrigued with the black and greenish-yellow coat with what looks like commas all over it. Would you wear something this bold?

There really have been so many wonderful collections this week that it is almost impossible to pick… Instead of going straight for my tried and true favorites like Zac Posen and Hilfiger (don’t worry I’ll probably end up talking about them tomorrow) I thought I might cover a new favorite—Alice + Olivia.

Stacey Bendet has managed to create a collection that is all the quirkiness that Alice + Olivia is known for while still making it glam. Crazy embellished tops and skirts are balanced by sophisticated lace and pencil skirts in neutral colors, and belted jackets.

My favorite piece is this gorgeous green, printed, peplum gown. I think the red carpet deserves to see this dress… or my closet.
