Fall’s Perfect Red Lip

When it comes to my makeup routine I would say that I take advantage of every product necessary to get the job done: concealer, foundation, mascara, bronzer, eye shadow, and eye shadow primer. I tend to end the whole process with lip balm, which I would agree is fairly anti-climatic. So, I finally made the plunge and bought a lipstick, but not any color lipstick—I bought red lipstick. At first I was a tad bit nervous about wearing such a bold color, but the more I wore it the more I fell in love with it.

With fall quickly approaching I find myself wanting to venture into trying different shades of my new favorite lip color and thankfully a bold red lip is this year’s hottest beauty trend. With new shades popping up seemingly all the time there is sure to be a shade that you’ll love whether dazzling ruby or a subtle brick-red.

Bright Red

When I think red lipstick, I think 1950’s move star and that’s exactly what NARS Jungle Red semi-matte lipsticks accomplishes—It was also named “Best Beauty Buys” by Instyle Magazine. A tip from Shayna Shapiro, Lead Trainer about using a semi-matte lipstick, “Semi-Matte Lipsticks are great for creating a stained effect: Just put some lipstick on your finger and press it onto your lips. If you’re looking to make teeth appear whiter, use a lip color with blue undertones”.

Brick Red

MAC ‘s Dubonnet Almpified Creme is my red lipstick of choice. This “quietly shiny” brick-red hue is color-packed without being too dramatic. Plus its ultra creamy texture keeps your lips from drying out. It also happens to be the color used on Natalie Portman in Black Swan.

Berry Red

Berry lips found their way on to the fall runways at Lela Rose amongst other designers. Bobbi Brown’s Treatment Lip Shine in Berry, a bright red berry, is the perfect way to accomplish this look.

“You get the best of both worlds with Treatment Lip Shine SPF 15. It gives you beautiful color and actually improves the condition of your lips. It’s a truly modern formula.” – Bobbi Brown

Red-Orange

This bold hue has been seen on everyone from Rachel McAdams to Tessa Thompson—suiting almost every skin tone with its wide range of shades. The key to pulling off this vibrant color is to keep the rest of your makeup as well as your hair simple. Of course, if you just aren’t the simple type do as Heidi Klum does and try a sultry smoky eye. (Shown above: Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Creme Lipstick in Raven)
