New Scottsdale Hangout: El’s Cafe at El Dorado Scottsdale

Donald Draper could have a field day here.

If you tend to romanticize the past and yearn for the times of Slim Aaron’s glamorous poolside photography, you’re in luck.

The El Dorado Resort is a hidden gem located in Old Town Scottsdale, and we just can’t get enough of its mid-century charm.

The new, boutique hideaway was converted from a 1960 vacation rental property and opened to the public in Fall 2012. The rooms are decidedly retro and super spacious as they’re converted from condos; they feature large kitchens, dining rooms and beautiful bedrooms and living areas, each unique in their colors, furniture and feel. Many open directly to the pool area, and some even have expansive private balconies. The hospitality is extraordinarily accommodating, offering beach cruiser bikes for quick spins around town and expert advice on the area.

But the true highlight of a stay at El Dorado are the cheeky indoor/outdoor living spaces and poolside ambiance that bring to mind the specific appeal of Slim Aaron’s landscapes. At least a dozen separate seating areas sit on the property, some in the shade near flat screen TVs and fire pits, some in the sun next to the pool and in private cabana areas separated by curtains. It’s easy to spend hours poolside with cocktails, or taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi under the covered patio.

Yes, it is a fantastic place to stay, if visiting the Valley of the Sun. Luckily, those of us who live in the area will soon have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful El Dorado in-between staycations, as El’s Cafe opens this January in the resort. Anybody can stop by the new hangout to enjoy:

  • Breakfast baked goods like muffins, croissants and coffee cakes
  • Other breakfast goodies like cereal and fruit
  • Sandwiches and salads like Greek and tuna salad, frittatas and turkey sandwiches
  • Espresso, cappuccinos, lattes, hot chocolate, soft drink and tea options
  • Happy hour any time of day, with wine by the glass and beer
So, who wants to meet for a glass of chardonnay and a little sunshine in a few weeks?
