3 Beauty Boosting Skin-sational Recipes

It’s easy to remember to slather on sunscreen during the hot, triple-digit summer days, but as we head into the cooler months it is important that we remember that mild temperatures don’t mean that we can stop protecting our skin from harsh UV rays. UV protection should be a part of our daily beauty regime–sunscreen, SPF foundation and moisturizers are great external choices, but did you know that you can also protect your skin, defend against skin cancer, and avoid wrinkles from the inside?

Kara Schell of Van Dyke Laser & Skin shares with us some of her delicious body and beauty boosting recipes that help do just that! And we’re positive you’ll be making them all year long.

Skin-sational Smoothie An amazing, and easy, skin-saving smoothie that combines aloe vera, mint, cucumber, parsley, kale, green apple, chia and spirulina to promote purification from the inside-out.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cup purified water or coconut water
2 oz aloe vera
1/2 cucumber, skinned
1 green apple, skinned
1 handful of parsley
3 leaves of kale or a handful of spinach
5-10 mint leaves
2 tbs chia seeds
1 tbs spirulina

Directions: Simply blend until smooth. Sip slowly and enjoy!

Edamame-Ginger Dip Think of this dip as an Asian rendition of hummus, made with edamame, ginger and soy. Serve with rice crackers and/or carrot sticks.

Ingredients:
8 ounces frozen shelled edamame
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 tablespoon tahini1 clove garlic
1/8 teaspoon saltHot pepper sauce to taste

PREPARATION: Cook edamame according to package directions. Puree the cooked edamame, water, soy sauce, ginger, vinegar, tahini, garlic, salt and hot sauce in a food processor until smooth. Chill for 1 hour before serving.

Avocado-Grapefruit RelishThis pairs great with fish tacos!

Ingredients:
1 large seedless grapefruit
1/2 avocado, diced
1 small shallot, minced
1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
1 teaspoon red-wine vinegar
1 teaspoon honey

PREPARATION: With a sharp knife, remove the peel and white pith from grapefruit and discard. Cut the grapefruit segments from the surrounding membrane, letting them drop into a bowl. Add avocado, shallot, cilantro, vinegar and honey. Toss well to combine & enjoy!
