How to Transform Your Closet into a Luxury Boutique

Closets are more than just a storage space. It’s a room people use just as much as the laundry room. Therefore, it’s important that your closet reflects that. One trend that people are utilizing to optimize closet space, keep it organized, and match their lifestyle is luxury boutique closets.

Jared Robinson, owner of Robinson Trim, specializes in custom closet solutions and has been serving Scottsdale and the Greater Phoenix Area for almost two decades.

“A boutique-style closet is a luxurious, highly organized, and aesthetically pleasing space designed similarly to a high-end retail boutique,” Robinson said. “They often feature custom organization, elegant presentation, pristine lighting, and special storage. If you’re thinking about renovating your closet, here are some tips to help you achieve the area you desire.”

Map out your belongings

Before you think about shelving and lighting, it’s essential to take a good look at what you have, how you want to display it, and what you might add to your closet in the future. If you own a lot of coats and dresses, you’re going to need a lot of hanging space. If you own a lot of designer shoes or handbags, you’re going to need more display shelving. You need to account for items you want stored but not displayed. Extra shelving at the top provides a great way to store other miscellaneous items, such as luggage.

If you plan to store a lot of belongings, consider adding an island. Closet islands are a great way to maximize storage space, with drawers and shelves for accessories and shoes. It centralizes items such as jewelry, bags, and folded clothes. It also provides a functional workspace on top for laying out outfits, packing suitcases, or even sorting laundry.

Consider how your closet might grow in the future. Are you constantly adding to your shoe collection? Add some extra shelf space. You may not really need a space for dresses now, but if you ever go through a period when you’re invited to several weddings or events, you’re going to need a place for everything.

Keep dust out

Boutique closets offer a great way to display your favorite belongings in the open, creating a more luxurious feel and making everyday use easier.

It’s crucial to ensure that all your belongings, including those on display, are protected from the open air. Consider adding a set of French doors. This keeps the dust out and protects your items. If you prefer an open closet, use glass panels for hanging items and displaying those you want to showcase.

Add customizable shelves

If you want a closet that truly feels boutique, invest in adjustable shelving. They make for great custom closet solutions. People often have the misconception that luxury closets are defined by their size, but they’re actually defined by organization.

You don’t want the same-size shelving for every item, especially shoes and bags. You don’t want your tall boots to have the same size shelving as your sandals. Similarly, for bags, you don’t want a large Tory Burch bag to have the same space as a mini Kelly. This wastes space and isn’t as aesthetically pleasing.

Adjustable shelves let you adjust your shelving as you add or remove items from your collection. They let you adjust the height of bins or folded clothes, maximizing vertical space. You can also position the shelves for easy reach, making your morning more convenient.

Consider lighting

Lighting is one of the most important aspects. The last thing that you want is for your closet to feel like a dark cave. This isn’t very inviting and makes it more difficult to find the items you’re looking for. Adding light creates an inviting, open space.  Light strips are a great way to add lighting to your closet. Utilizing LED light strips on top shelves, toe-kick areas, or even between shelving units can make a big difference.

They’re often fully adjustable with a wireless remote or switch. You can pick the lighting, color, or brightness that works best for your specific needs. They can be bright enough to light the whole room or be adjusted to provide simple ambient light.

“If you want to enhance your displays, light overhead lighting can do just the trick. Whether it’s to enhance displays or general ambient lighting, cool flush lights do the trick. They create a clean and unnoticeable look without being as bright as fluorescent lights,” Robinson said.

The great thing about renovating your closet is that you can map it out beforehand to meet your needs very well. Your closet is more than just a closet. It is one of the first places you spend time in the morning and the last at night. It’s critical that you enjoy the space and customize it to fit your needs. Learn more at robinsontrim.com.
