Affordable, practical, predictable but still a bit of fun behind the wheel. This statement perfectly encapsulates the driving experience of the 2026 Mazda CX-5. For the new year, the Mazda spirit of excitement is retained in measure, while addressing concerns about the cramped interior that plagued the previous model. Having listened, Mazda did a completely redesign of the CX-5 for 2026. Both widened and lengthened it. This translates to more legroom in the back, increased cargo space and less claustrophobia. Even the door openings have been enlarged for an easier time climbing in and out.
Equipped with the same, somewhat underpowered 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, the CX-5 could definitely use the added muscle of a hybrid set up. Luckily, this will likely be an option for the 2027 model. If you need additional power now and can’t be bothered to wait, the CX-50 still adds a turbo to its 2.5-liter. Which makes a considerable difference. Bringing it back to 2026 for now though, other new features include an optional 15.6″ touchscreen display, which is bright, crisp, vibrant and looks great. From the display, you can toggle between seven different ambient interior light settings, customizing your environment to fit your particular mood in any given moment.
Behind the wheel, the lack of power is evident. Acceleration is slow but linear. Suspension will soak up any imperfections in your path fairly effectively, delivering a comfortable ride overall. Handling is composed and responsive as well. Which is what we’ve all come to expect from Mazda. In addition to a lower floor, more cargo capacity, legroom, and just space in general; the interior also delivers a fresh, new design for 2026. A step or two behind the more refined CX-50 sure, but with an upscale look and feel beyond what its price-tag would suggest. Clean and clutter free, with many controls, like climate functions, vehicle settings, etc. neatly integrated into the infotainment touch display.
