How We Are Doing Relaxed Chic This Season

A few months ago, we had the pleasure of sitting down with the venerable Ken Downing, Fashion Director of Neiman Marcus, who told us all about an ease happening in fashion. He likes to call it, “relaxed chic.” And the way he describes it “A couture sweatshirt; instead of a sweatshirt in fleece you’re seeing a sweatshirt in chiffon or in lace. Interesting luxury fabric tract pants have been done in a really super couture sort of way,” we are totally in.

This is how we are doing Relaxed Chic at Style Files this season.

Do you think that Ken knew about this Valentino cashmere and lace sweater when he talked to us way back in April? Whether or not he was in the know, we are loving the idea of pairing a chic but casual sweater with a skirt (a leather skirt would be especially on trend for fall). You can even take it from night to day (yeah we totally flipped that) and wear it with skinnies.

We would never condone going out of the house in your pajamas–you know, the old high school tees and worn yoga pants–but Halston Hertiage tweed sweatpants are an entirely different story. Who knew you could wear your sweats with heels and to your favorite trendy dinner spot?

Feeling a little more rebellious, a little more grunge this season? We love this R13 plaid shirt. You can make it extremely chic a la the St. Laurent runway–black tights or skinnies, and black leather booties. Don’t forget a killer small bag with studs!

In our world Relaxed Chic means comfort and what is more comfortable than a pair of flats. Burberry ‘Pencomb’ loafers have our vote for comfy, but adorable shoe of the season.
