Phoenix Mahjong Club Rebrands as The Mahj Clubs

Phoenix Mahjong Club has announced its rebrand to The Mahj Clubs, a membership-based social destination built around American mahjong, connection and recurring community programming. The new name reflects the company’s plans to grow beyond its inaugural clubhouse near Fashion Square, with additional locations under consideration and long-term expansion envisioned for California and Las Vegas.

Founder Julia Zastrow established Arizona’s first membership-based, brick-and-mortar mahjong club in January 2026. The new name signals the next phase of the business: building a growing collection of clubs rather than remaining centered around a single location.

Originally founded in 2004, The Mahj Clubs began by hosting intimate mahjong gatherings in members’ homes. What started with the simple idea that mahjong could be a reason to gather, with connection as the true point, eventually grew into a full clubhouse when Zastrow opened the Scottsdale location.

“We started with a simple belief: mahjong is an excuse to gather, but connection is the reason people come back,” said Zastrow. “The Mahj Clubs reflect where the community is headed – more places where people can learn, play, meet new friends and feel like they belong. Our Scottsdale club proved that this model resonates, and we are ready to bring it to more neighborhoods across the Valley.”

The current 2,600-square-foot clubhouse seats up to 80 players across 13 automatic mahjong tables. The space also includes a lounge, bar-height gathering area, private-event and catering capabilities, and a boutique featuring mahjong-themed gifts. Programming includes open and drop-in play, beginner lessons, guided play, competitive leagues, socials, pop-up events, workshops and private events.

The Mahj Clubs welcomes anyone interested in playing or learning to play. Since opening, the club has grown to 150 members and welcomes hundreds of guests and beginner players each month. Beginner lessons are $50 per person, while catered socials, open play and drop-in sessions for nonmembers start at $40 per person.

The Mahj Clubs is introducing new membership options, including an unlimited Mahj-Pro Membership for $1,695 per year, a six-month seasonal membership for $895 and a monthly membership for $195. Each tier includes access to social events, programming and a calendar of experiences with hotels, restaurants and boutiques.

As new locations open in Arizona and other U.S. markets, members will also be able to use their memberships across The Mahj Clubs network. Learn more at themahjclubs.com.
