Scottsdale is getting a starring role of its own. Underneath the Glittery Moon, a romantic comedy featuring an entirely local cast and crew, will make its world premiere October 15 at 7 p.m. at the Virginia G. Piper Theater at Scottsdale Center for the Arts.
The film was written and directed by Valley resident Mark Bork, who brought together a cast of 30 actors along with executive producers Marilyn and James Dean, Jim and Tami Paxton, and Jason and Paige Vickers.
At the center of the story is Katie, a 22-year-old barista with Down syndrome played by Moriah Silverberg. Her warmth and authenticity help anchor a story that spans generations, bringing together characters from middle schoolers to senior citizens in a romantic comedy focused on connection, community and the things people have in common.
The film was shot entirely on location throughout the Valley, with Scottsdale taking center stage. Familiar streets, landmarks and local coffee shops provide the backdrop, giving the movie a distinctly recognizable sense of place.
But the production is about more than putting Scottsdale on screen. The filmmakers also are using the project to support local nonprofits, including GiGi’s Playhouse in North Scottsdale, an organization dedicated to changing the way the world views Down syndrome. A painting featured in the film will be auctioned during the premiere, with all proceeds benefiting GiGi’s Playhouse.
“My intention with this film was to create a real community, bringing together local writers, actors, and crew who share a love for cinema. To tell an uplifting story while giving a platform to both emerging talent and seasoned professionals alike. And when I say community, I mean Scottsdale specifically. I’ve lived and worked here most of my adult life, and honestly, I think it’s the 8th Wonder of the World,” Bork said.
The world premiere of Underneath the Glittery Moon takes place October 15 at 7 p.m. at the Virginia G. Piper Theater at Scottsdale Center for the Arts. Tickets are on sale now.
