Toyota’s Highlander has long been a go-to for families who want good gas mileage and the peace of mind that comes with Toyota’s rock-solid reliability. The trade-off? Interior space that feels a little tight compared to other midsize SUVs. Enter the Grand Highlander—a bigger, more spacious option that shares most of the name, but not much else. It’s longer, wider, and taller, with an extra four inches of length that translates into way more room, especially in the third row, where adults can finally ride without complaint. Or at least much less complaining. Under the hood, you’ll find a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder paired with an eight-speed automatic, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive available. There’s also a hybrid version. With a roomy, stylish cabin, plenty of standard features and safety tech, and smooth road manners, the Grand Highlander makes a strong case for itself in a crowded field that includes heavy hitters like the Kia Telluride and Mazda CX-90.

A new, budget friendly entry-level LE trim enters the line-up for 2025. Giving shoppers a more affordable entry point. Other changes for 2025 include a removable second-row center console for XLE models and the addition/removal of several paint colors. If you’re looking to really turn heads, the Hybrid Nightshade adds style and substance to the Grand Highlander equation. With blacked-out roof rails, mirror caps, front bumper trim and door handles. There’s also black badging on the rear lift gate and a black spoiler. Dark 20” wheels make a bold statement for style as well. Helping the Grand Highlander to clearly distinguish itself from looking too much like a mini-van. The 2.5L 4-cylinder hybrid system makes 245 hp and will also get you a combined 36 mpg. An impressively big number for a big car. Performance and acceleration is predictably limited, but a Sport mode helps punch things up, at the expense of mpg’s of course.

In summary, the 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander is a spacious, comfortable riding SUV. The Nightshade treatment will help it turn a few extra heads with all of the dark trim elements on the outside and those menacing 20” black wheels. On the inside, you’ll find legroom for all, even in the third row. Plenty of smart cargo space and an interior that’s well-appointed with all of the little luxurious amenities that will pamper each passenger.
