A dream team unites to build futures in Phoenix though their skills and dedication to design.
In business, we’re taught to find a need and fill it. This year, Desert Star Construction was honored to collaborate with others in the design and construction community who recognized that this premise applies just as equally to people in need.
“Most of us think of human trafficking as a problem in other countries, but it is happening in our town—to girls who are someone’s daughter, granddaughter, sister or niece,” said DSC President Jerry Meek. “We recognized that our company had the expertise and networks and take action in a truly vital way. There was no way we could turn a blind eye.”
“You had us at hello.” That’s what participants of the inaugural Dream Rooms, The Rescue Project said when Team DSC® asked for their help in this life-changing endeavor: to turn ten 60-year-old, dilapidated residential rooms into a safe haven that moves underage girls and women from the streets of Phoenix and a life of human trafficking into an environment of hope; where they can discover their potential and rebuild their lives. As one room designer said: “A place where dreams might even become possible again.”
And so we moved forward with a unified vision and the overwhelming support of ten interior designers, 300 generous companies and more than 1,000 volunteers. For two-and-a-half months, these individuals poured their time, resources and spirit onto this project. In the process, they gathered encouragement and donations from other vendors as they shared the story and the promise of the Dream Rooms. With steadfast help from Arizona Foothills Magazine, we regularly shared our progress with the Phoenix community and gained even more supporters.
On June 1, 12 girls and women from right here in our Valley moved into their Dream Rooms with a prevailing thought: “How could someone who doesn’t even know me love me this much?” Our answer: Because you are worth it! As one designer framed it: “A project like this reminds us of our potential to make another life feel cherished and valued.”
Seeds of hope were already budding as Dream Room residents reacted to their new homes. “It’s hard to feel negative here.”… “It makes me feel like somebody truly does care about me.”… “It gives me something to look forward to.”… “It gives me hope.”
These feelings prevailed as Team DSC® and the entire Dream Rooms effort gathered to celebrate the completed safe havens. An email sent later by Phoenix Dream Center’s Executive Director Brian Steele put the accomplishment into perspective. For Brian, the journey from the first days of the Center’s Outreach Team to the opening of the Dream Rooms leaves him speechless. “Absolutely speechless,” he says. To the Dream Room supporters, he adds: “Thank you for believing. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for enduring. Thank you for the sleepless nights. Thank you for your heart. Thank you for saying yes.”
