There are 30 fitness indicators that contribute to the final results and include: obesity and exercise rates, death rate from cardiovascular disease, acres of park land, number of primary care physicians per capita, percentage of residents who bicycle or walk to work, and more.<\/p>\n<p>The index compares to 50 largest metropolitan areas on a 100-point scale.<\/p>\n<p>And now for the results! Today I will reveal \u201cAmerica\u2019s 10 Fittest Cities.\u201d But stay tuned for \u201cAmerica\u2019s 10 Most Sluggish Cities\u201d tommorow! Oh, and be sure to check out how Phoenix ranks on the list at the bottom of the post. Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p><strong>America\u2019s 10 Fittest Cities:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Washington, D.C.<\/strong><br \/>\nScore: 73.5<br \/>\nObesity Rate: 22.6%<br \/>\nExercise Rate: 80.1%<br \/>\nIt looks like the cold weather back east doesn\u2019t deter civilians from getting out and enjoying some quality exercise. Washington D.C. has the highest score as it received great marks on almost every category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Boston, Mass.<\/strong><br \/>\nScore 72.6<br \/>\nObesity Rate: 19.9%<br \/>\nExercise Rate: 78.6%<br \/>\n\u201cBoston\u2019s relatively affluent population avoids cigarettes and stays trim. The state also mandates that all its residents have health insurance,\u201d according to Forbes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Minneapolis, Minn.<\/strong><br \/>\nScore: 71.7<br \/>\nObesity Rate: 23.9%<br \/>\nExercise Rate: 84.3%<br \/>\nAlthough Minneapolis\u2019 obesity rate is a bit higher, the also high exercise rate brings this Minnesota metropolitan to the top of our list!<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Seattle, Wash.<\/strong><br \/>\nScore: 70.5<br \/>\nObesity Rate: 22.8%<br \/>\nExercise Rate: 81.9%<br \/>\nAnother cold city is yet again surprisingly active! \u201cSeattle scores high by providing physical education classes for kids and tennis courts for adults,\u201d according to Forbes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Portland, Ore.<\/strong><br \/>\nScore: 70.4<br \/>\nObesity Rate: 23.8%<br \/>\nExercise Rate: 82.3%<br \/>\nPortland\u2019s many dog parks, doctor\u2019s offices and \u201cno smoking\u201d signs bring it to the top 5 most fit, according to Forbes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Denver, Colo.<\/strong><br \/>\nScore: 69.9<br \/>\nObesity Rate: 19.3%<br \/>\nExercise Rate: 83%<br \/>\n\u201cThe Mile High City has low rates of disability and heart disease,\u201d according to Forbes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Sacramento, Calif.<\/strong><br \/>\nScore: 65.8<br \/>\nObesity Rate: 21.4%<br \/>\nExercise Rate: 82.3%<br \/>\nWhat makes this capital city so fit? A high percentage of residents say they walk or bike to work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. San Francisco, Calif.<\/strong><br \/>\nScore: 64.7<br \/>\nObesity Rate: 18.4%<br \/>\nExercise Rate: 81.5%<br \/>\n\u201cLow poverty rates\u201d seems to be the contributing factor as to why San Francisco has low rates of diabetes, smoking and obesity. But if you have ever visited the city by the bay, you will notice that people are extremely active and in-shape!<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Hartford, Conn.<\/strong><br \/>\nScore: 64.4<br \/>\nObesity Rate: 21.1%<br \/>\nExercise Rate: 77.2%<br \/>\n\u201cHartford denizens enjoy a disproportionate number of farmers\u2019 markets, baseball diamonds and golf courses \u2013 and eat lots of fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. Austin, Texas<\/strong><br \/>\nScore: 63.9<br \/>\nObesity Rate: 22.5%<br \/>\nExercise Rate: 78.4%<br \/>\nThe number of parks and pools per capita, along with low rates of asthma and heart disease are what makes this city barely make the top 10.<\/p>\n<p>And as for our desert city of Phoenix, we rank low on the top 50 fittest city and come in at #32.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#32: Phoenix, Ariz.<\/strong><br \/>\nScore: 47.4<br \/>\nThe index shows that Phoenix is low due to the low percentage of people using public transportation, walking or biking to work, high percentage of people with asthma, few percentage of parks per capita, lower level of state requirement for Physical Education classes and primary health care providers per capita. However, the Valley\u2019s strengths are that we have a higher percentage eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day, lower death rate for diabetes, lower percent of smokers, and
