Allegedly, a 25-year-old teacher in Japan died after falling from a 5-inch platform sandal and fracturing her skull, and another Japanese woman died in a car crash when her stiletto-clad foot couldn\u2019t get to the brake in time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Skinny Jeans<\/strong><br \/>\nWearing too-tight pants <em>every<\/em> day might lead to meralgia parenthetic (MP), a form of itchy, burning, tingling nerve damage on the pelvis and upper thigh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Oversized Purses<\/strong><br \/>\nExtended use of a large, heavy bag may lead to irreversible back, neck, and shoulder problems. Family physical practitioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2007\/01\/16\/us-life-bags-idUSN1618557920070116\">Dr. Jane Sadler<\/a> to Reuters, \u201cI see so many women with neck pains and headaches and what I usually do is look for their purse and pick it up [\u2026] and they\u2019re usually anywhere from seven to ten pounds.\u201d Guilty as charged.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Flip-Flops<\/strong><br \/>\nDeep down, I think we all know flip-flops don\u2019t cut it in ways of support, protection, grip or secureness. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970204909104577235313412770808.html\"><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>, researchers at Auburn University found that flip-flops led to \u201cfoot fatigue, sore calf muscles and an altered gait, which could cause long-term ankle and hip problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Cheap Jewelry<\/strong><br \/>\nAccording to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/8301-504763_162-57397465-10391704\/costume-jewelry-found-to-have-high-levels-of-toxins-and-carcinogens-tests-show\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Ecology Center<\/a>, more than half of the jewelry found at stores like Claire\u2019s, Forever21, Hot Topic, and Wal-Mart contained high levels of hazardous chemicals over the limit of what\u2019s safe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Wedding Rings<\/strong><br \/>\nFingers naturally change sizes due to weight gain and bodily changes, causing rings to become stuck. This predicament can cause a nasty variety of injuries, ranging from bruising and circulatory damage to even the accidental loss of a finger.<\/p>\n<p>From surgeon Monica Wood, MD, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwhandortho.com\/the-most-dangerous-piece-of-jewely\/\" target=\"_blank\">Northwest Hand & Orthopedics<\/a>, \u201cI remember one patient\u2014a charming senior who did no heavy work.\u00a0She got up on a step to put something on a shelf.\u00a0 The step tipped and she reached to catch herself on the shelf.\u00a0She very nearly lost her finger. Her ring caught on the shelf and ripped through the tissue, lodging itself in one of her joints.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. Keratin Straightening<\/strong><br \/>\nSmooth and shiny strands sound ideal, but is it worth risking exposure to unsafe levels of formaldehyde? Long-term exposure to formaldehyde has been linked to cancer, not to mention side effects of\u00a0eye and nervous system disorders, respiratory tract problems, chest pain, vomiting, and rashes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Expired Beauty Products<\/strong><br \/>\nDitch old beauty products (yes, they all expire). If not, you\u2019re directly applying germs to your skin post-expiration date. Pay attention to the expiration dates of your beauty products and exchange promptly after the expiration date(s). Most beauty products will have something called a PAO (period after opening) symbol, which looks like a little jar with a number in it, indicating how many months that product is safe to use after first opened.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. Colored Contacts<\/strong><br \/>\nBefore you get those sick violet eyes, check with an optometrist.
