As the 76th year of the Phoenix Open tees off, we take a look at the rich history the tournament is based on.

The Waste Management Phoenix Open welcomes its 76th year in the rankings as the most fan-friendly tournament of the PGA tour, with the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale attracting the largest galleries of any golf tournament in the world. But before we witness the world’s top golfers take their best swing from Jan. 30 to Feb. 5, let’s step back and take a look at 10 events that has shaped the tournament thus far.

1932 First Tournament. Ralph Guldahl won $600.

1945 First Female Participant, Babe Zaharias.

1959 First African-American Participant, Charlie Sifford.

1972 First year of the famed Birds Nest at Phoenix Country Club. Continues at TPC Scottsdale.

1973 First Televised Tournament.

1977 Youngest Champion, Jerry Pate (23 years, three months and three days).

1987 First year the tournament was played at TPC Scottsdale. Paul Azinger won.

2001 Mark Calcavecchia sets scoring records. First and only hole-in-one on a par-4 in PGA Tour History, Andrew Magee, 17th hole (First Round).

2008 Largest Single-Day Attendance: 170,802 (Third Round) and Largest Week-Long Attendance: 538,356.

2009 Oldest Champion, Kenny Perry (48 years, 3 months and 21 days).

Other Notables:

Phil Mickelson has played in the Phoenix Open 22 times. He is the top money winner (more than $2.5 million).

2011 marked the 25th consecutive year the tournament has been played at the TPC Scottsdale.
