In fact, many of the featured dishes happen to be the personal recipes of Lithuanian-born Sonata Molocajeviene Tuft, the restaurant’s owner.
Before you can even take a bite, the restaurant excited with its good looks. It is a glamorous dining space, with plush booths, high-top tables and beautiful pops of metallic and green. Though the restaurant is quite large, each table feels rather private and comfortable. Next door, early birds can even grab fresh organic juices (which are also found on the main menu), smoothies, Italian coffee, healthy to-go items and a variety of European pastries, muffins and cookies at the casual Restart Bar.
Though the menu is chock-full of hearty crowd favorites, like chicken Kiev and beef stroganoff, we suggest ordering several small plates to share and savor. Each is unique and packs quite a bit of flavor. The potato pancakes is a good–and somewhat light–start. Topped with smoked salmon, each thin, delicious pancake is services with cooling herb Smetana and a sweet-and-spicy veggie chutney called Ljutenica.

The kepta duona is an absolute must-get. Comprising crispy pieces of rye bread tossed in duck fat aoili and havarti cheese, kepta duona is basically a Lithuanian comfort food that is meant to be eaten alongside beer. (Sold!) It is decadent, addictive, salty, cheesy and oh-so delicious, thanks to a tempting texture combo of crispy and creamy (and cheesy).

The cabbage rolls, which is one of the most-ordered entrees, are stuffed with a hearty mixture of pork, beef and rice braised in pomodoro sauce whose tomato-y flavor shines through. The rolls are then served with Boursin mash and topped with Bryndza cheese, which is popular in Eastern Europe. Though the phrase “cabbage roll” might not bat too many eyes, the dish is delish.

Perogies, another hallmark of Eastern European cuisine, are available a few different ways at Sonata’s. We loved the braised beef cheek option, with wild mushrooms, baby carrots, pickled shallots, veal glace and Smetana. Savory and comforting, the perogies are especially perfect for a cool day to warm you right up.

Sonata’s might win the prize for the Valley’s most colorful dish with its borscht. The bright fuchsia beet soup is nutrition-packed and a great dish to make you feel good and balanced after an indulgent weekend–or to kick off the week on a healthy note. The meatballs add protein and texture, while root veggies add a little crunch (and some extra good-for-you-ness). And you must sop up every last boldly pink drop with a slice of rye bread.

The happy hour menu runs from 2 to 5 p.m., and Thursday through Saturday, enjoy reverse happy hour from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Brunch was recently added, as well. Also, Sonata’s Restaurant is introducing a new Russian Nights event the first Saturday of every month beginning on March 11 featuring bottle service, Russian food specialties (like smoked sardines, herring in a blanket salad, herring and hot potatoes) and live entertainment.

Sonata’s Restaurant and Restart Bar in Scottsdale is
