For women who have spent months – or years – trying to coordinate vacations around everyone’s work schedules, budgets, relationships, and other obligations, solo travel offers a surprisingly simple solution: Go when you want to go. According to Solo Female Travelers<\/a>, 85 percent of women who travel solo say freedom and flexibility are major reasons they choose to travel alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That freedom can mean picking the destination without a committee meeting, building an itinerary around personal interests or deciding what sounds fun when you wake up that morning. And increasingly, women don’t travel alone because they couldn’t find someone to go with them. It’s something they choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phoenix-based ASU graduate Sophia Kitchen knows the idea well. The twenty-something traveler and author is also the founder of Podper.co<\/a>, a travel tips site designed to help people navigate their adventures. Resources like hers are part of a growing collection of tools available to women who want to feel more prepared before heading out on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One friend can’t get the time off. Another is saving for a house. Someone else has been \u201cchecking flights\u201d for three months. Before long, that dream vacation has been sitting in the group chat instead of on anyone’s calendar. Solo travel removes a lot of those logistical hurdles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You choose the destination, set the budget and decide exactly what you want the trip to look like. Want to spend an entire afternoon in a museum? Do it. Want to sleep until 10 a.m. and eat tacos for breakfast? Nobody’s itinerary needs to be consulted. That independence is part of what makes solo travel appealing in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no rule saying your first solo adventure has to involve backpacking through a remote country, navigating five train stations or communicating exclusively through hand gestures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, choosing a manageable destination can make the experience much more enjoyable. For a first trip, consider factors such as walkability, reliable public transportation, language familiarity, and how easy it is to navigate the area. The goal is to discover that you can travel independently and have a good time doing it. Once you’ve got a little solo-travel confidence under your belt, you can always make the next adventure more ambitious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A certain confidence comes from looking like you know exactly where you’re headed, even when your phone is quietly recalculating the route for the fourth time. Before heading out, research your route and download maps you can access offline. Get familiar with the general layout of the area you’re visiting so you’re not completely dependent on your phone once you’re there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when you do need to check directions, step into a caf\u00e9, shop, or other safe location rather than stopping in the middle of a crowded sidewalk with your phone held out in front of you. It’s a small habit, but moving through a new place with purpose can make you feel more comfortable and confident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest misconceptions about traveling alone is that you’ll spend the entire trip eating every meal by yourself and having no one to talk to. That’s only true if you want it to be. Group tours, cooking classes, walking tours, hostels, caf\u00e9s and other experiences can all create opportunities to meet people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference is that when you’re traveling solo, you get to decide when you want company and when you want to disappear into your own little world for a few hours. There is something pretty appealing about having both options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Budget-conscious travelers know the temptation: Find the cheapest hotel, the cheapest flight, and the cheapest transportation option and declare victory. But the lowest price isn’t always the lowest overall cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A hotel an hour outside the city might save money on the room but cost more in transportation and valuable vacation time. An ultra-cheap flight might come with baggage fees, inconvenient departure times, or an airport nowhere near your actual destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you’re traveling alone, convenience can be valuable. Spending a little more for a centrally located hotel, straightforward transportation, or a flight that doesn’t require a logistical obstacle course can make the trip easier. Perhaps the biggest benefit of a solo trip has nothing to do with the destination. It’s the feeling that comes from figuring things out on your own.
