That background is the whole reason we do this differently. I’ve worked in these homes and as a mom of 3 I have hired for these roles. I know what families are navigating when they bring someone in, and I know what makes the difference between a hire that works and one that quietly falls apart six months later.

Most families come to us knowing they need help, but not knowing exactly what that help should look like. That’s where the real work happens. Before we ever send a resume, we spend time understanding your family and how your household runs, what your days actually look like, where the pressure points are, and what you need from someone in your home. Families often walk away from that first conversation with more clarity than they came in with.

From there, it’s matchmaking, not resume pushing. Skills and experience are the baseline, not the deciding factor. What determines whether a placement lasts is fit: communication style, values, how someone handles the unwritten parts of the job. We get to know our candidates well enough to make that call, because we’ve invested the same time in understanding them as we have in understanding you.

We’re also serious about the details that protect your household. Legal pay, written work agreements, clear expectations from day one, and real communication after placement. Getting those things right up front is what keeps a great match lasting for years.

AZF: What is your “life motto”?

Everything happens for a reason. I really believe that. When something is hard, or when it doesn’t go the way I wanted, there’s a reason for it, even if I can’t see it in the moment.

This past year proved it for me. Losing a key employee after eight years felt like the worst possible thing at the time. It turned out to be the thing that woke me up. It forced me to look at what I’d stopped doing as a leader, and my business is better for it.

It doesn’t make hard things easier while you’re in them. But it does keep me from panicking, and it keeps me looking for what I’m supposed to be learning instead of just trying to get past it.

AZF: Did you always know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur? If not, when did you realize that it was the right path for you?

Not at all. I never set out to own a business. I was a nanny for 15 years and I loved the work. The Nanny Joynt started because I saw the need. I knew what a great match felt like, and I knew it only happened when someone actually took the time to understand both the family and the caregiver. That wasn’t happening.

But seeing a need and believing you’re the person to fill it are two very different things. For a long time I had serious imposter syndrome. I wasn’t a “”business person.”” Even as it grew, part of me kept waiting for someone to point out that I didn’t belong in the room.

Somewhere along the way that stopped. I’ve been doing this since 2011, and when I look at what we’ve built, it’s pretty amazing to realize I was capable of this the whole time. I just needed to stop doubting myself.

AZF: How do you feel best supported?

By people who show up without being asked. My husband is the clearest example. He’s never once made me choose between him and what I was building. When I’m in a hard stretch, he picks everything up at home without me having to say a word. He coaches the boys’ teams, he’s present, so when I’m buried the kids aren’t missing a parent. He is one of the reasons any of this has been possible.

At work, I feel supported by a team who takes ownership. Not people waiting for me to tell them what to do, but people who see something and handle it. This past summer I took a month away with my family right after a major team transition, and they carried it. That’s support.

Honestly, I’ve had to learn to accept support. For years I thought carrying everything myself was the mark of a good founder and a good mom. It wasn’t. It just meant I was tired.

AZF: How do you feel best supported?

The people on the other side of the work. When it’s hard, I think about the mom who hasn’t slept in four months, or the family who tried to hire on their own and got burned. They’re out there right now, and what we do actually changes their lives for the better. That’s not something I can walk away from because I’m having a tough quarter or going through a tough situation.

I also think about my team. They chose to build this with me day after day, and they deserve a leader who doesn’t quit when it gets uncomfortable.

And my kids are watching. I want them to see that you can build something you care about, hit a wall, and keep going. That’s a more useful lesson than anything I could tell them.

AZF: Describe your perfect Saturday.

Coffee in bed, brought to me by my husband. That quiet hour before anyone else is up is my favorite part of the whole week. Then the gym, because that hour is non-negotiable for me.

After that, it depends on the season. If it’s baseball season, we’re at the field all day. Both of my boys play, my husband is usually coaching, and my daughter is running around being the best baseball sister there is. If you know, you know.

If it’s not baseball season, we’re taking the family out for a cruise in our ’66 convertible Mustang, going to brunch, and spending the afternoon with friends.

AZF: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a young entrepreneur who is just starting out?

Charge what you’re worth, and hire help sooner than you think you need it. I built my business on a very low flat fee for years because that was the norm in my market and I didn’t think I could ask for more. It took seasoned owners telling me to treat this like a business, not a hobby, before I changed it. The minute I priced at industry standard, business boomed. Nobody left. They took me more seriously.

Also, hire help sooner. I carried everything myself for far too long because I thought that’s what a good founder did. It wasn’t. It just meant I was tired, and it capped how much the business could grow. Bring people in earlier, document what you do so you can actually hand it off, and then trust the people you hired.

AZF: What excites you most about being an entrepreneur?

What I love is that I get to decide. If something isn’t working, I can change it. If the industry standard is bad, I don’t have to follow it. When I was a nanny, I worked with agencies who treated people unprofessionally and there was nothing I could do about it. Now I get to build the thing I wished existed.

I also love that I built my life around it, not the other way around. I started this as a nanny expecting my first baby, and this business has allowed me to still be the one at school pickup and drop off, and to never miss a baseball game. The blessings that entrepreneurship has provided are never lost on me.

And the best part is the ripple. Every decision I make about how we do this shows up in someone’s actual home. The matches that are still going strong ten years later, the mom who gets her sleep back and can enjoy her motherhood journey, the caregiver whose career and life changes because of the right placement.

That ripple is only possible because of my incredible team. Getting to hand-pick the people I spend my days with, and to build a company culture where everyone genuinely cares about these families and caregivers, might be the thing I love most.

Learn more about Trisha Pfeiffer by visiting nannyjoynt.com or following along on Instagram @thenannyjoynt

About the Foundress

The Foundress is a creative community of female entrepreneurs established by Coley Arnold.
