A typical day in my life includes…

if it’s a weekday I am working my 401K job from 8-5, and catching overtime if I can. Then sometimes it’s off to F.A.B.R.I.C. to work, or an FGI board meeting to attend. Other times lately it’s a phone conference for Phoenix Fashion Week, or off to a thrift shop to find pieces for whatever show I’m prepping for. I may have an appointment to style someone, or a rehearsal for a show I’m walking in. If it’s a down day I’ll get off work and head to my mom’s to have dinner there or go out with my dad and stepmom for dinner. If it’s a weekend I’m generally walking in, styling in, or producing a show, or at a concert, and sleeping in sometimes until 2 PM because on average I get one day a week off from everything if I am lucky.

I was born…

 in Phoenix, Arizona

My favorite thing about Arizona…

the feeling of community and support the fashion industry has here. I have had such great supportive experiences and made some really deep bonds.

I’m listening to…

Kesha’s new album “High Road”, Halsey’s new album “Manic”, Selena Gomez’s new album “Rare”, and Best Coast’s new singles. Strong women inspire me, clearly. Also Ashnikko. Always.

My family…

was mostly comprised of very strong women. I grew up with a very headstrong mother, grandmother, and stepmother. I feel very blessed to have lived with my grandmother in our home for quite some time. She really shaped me into who I am. It’s a small dysfunctional unit now, but it works.

If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be…

Morrissey. Always. His music really helped me survive half of my life, just knowing someone wrote such deep lyrics that I related to on every single level despite the age gap. He is such a deeply interesting, inspiring, complex person with such different viewpoints on things. I would level to get to know him on a deeper level.

One thing I cannot live without…

see above. I don’t think I would have made it this far without Morrissey and the Smiths music. Music on any level. Music is so important to me, and it is the largest source of inspiration for my creativity with fashion. My mom. Literally anything else I think I could live without, I just wouldn’t WANT to.

When I was younger, I wanted to be…

a singer. I took vocal coaching/lessons from childhood into my sophomore year of college. But my room was plastered with fashion magazine cutouts and spreads. You literally could not see an inch of wall. So I suppose it is unsurprising I ended up in this industry, the surprising thing may just be how long it took me to get into it.

I’m inspired by…

people who are unapologetically themselves.

The one person who motivates me is…

Hose B Wise. Hose was my savior, my best friend, my light and the world lost him last year. He stayed up for hours on end with me while I would sew and do homework for school. He would even sometimes do homework FOR me so I could do other projects. He kept me on track when I would get overwhelmed and lose it. He always supported me, encouraged me, and believed in me. I wouldn’t be where I am now or have made it this far without him. I fully believe he was the reason I won the stylist of the year and that his presence was there when I did. I felt like that project was too hard at times and wanted to stop but I would think of how that was doing him a disservice, along with everyone that has been by my side for the last 3 years who has shown up for me, helped me, supported me, worked for me for no other reason aside from just believing in me and rooting for me. I miss him every day and keep trying to make strides in his memory. I’m inspired by all the misfits, those who are different, and those with mental health issues they are open about that have kept pushing. Designer wise, Philipp Plein, Karl Lagerfeld, Lirika Matoshi, Jeremy Scott. Celebrity wise for their style, Taylor Momsen, Lil Peep, Ashnikko, and Blackbear. Beyond that though, humbly, I truly motivate myself the most. I thrived despite mental illness, and countless trials and tribulations. In the last 3 years, I truly found my place and worked hard to continue growing and challenging myself. I don’t feel I’ve stopped since.

If I could change anything in the world, it would be…

How humans treat one another. We tend to treat each other as if we are disposable and though the only feelings that matter are our own. I encourage everyone to think and feel outside of themselves. We all could learn to be a bit less cruel and a lot more patient and compassionate. I would love to eradicate the mental health stigma and open a ton more doors for tattooed/short/imperfect models. In Arizona, we have not accepted what states like NY and CA have for model standards. If you look at agencies like Wilhelmina, more than half of their male models are tattooed heavily even. However, we still seem to not accept that for female models. We need more diversity everywhere, especially in Arizona. Tattooed female models and short models are not any less physically beautiful, nor are those male models in these categories.

The perfect day would be…

Lately, for me, this would just be the ability to go back to my school. I went to the Art Institute of Phoenix. I had gone for 2 years before it closed down in the middle of my degree. I miss my classmates and professors and how much that school pushed me to do better and test my limits. I miss waking up at a decent hour and having one long class and having hands-on help with projects. I miss the opportunities it produced for me and the support and love I felt there.

My first job was…

Spirit Halloween. I had so much fun most of the time. I miss that job sometimes.

My favorite escape…

My friend Marco’s home in San Diego. It’s filled with artists. The door is always unlocked. I can walk right in like I’ve never left. Specifically, Coronado Island. The weather, the peace, the ocean. My mental state feels so good there. I used to go visit with no return date planned. Every time I go we go to this tiki bar in Pacific Beach called Grass Skirt like every night. It’s through a meat locker door in a Poke restaurant and it is my absolute favorite. They have a swing and staged rainstorms and frozen drinks and fire. It’s incredible. I always also have to hit Fashion Mall, the Hello Kitty Café, and my fav restaurants in Coronado, Primavera, and Brigantine. When Marco works I just go wander Coronado Island. I’ve done it for 14 years and it will never get old. Locally, I have a spot I found in Tapatio Cliffs on the top of a mountain that has a bench. It looks over the whole neighborhood below you. The stars and city lights look so cool. It’s like being in a play railroad village or something. You can watch all the families’ comings and goings up there. It’s so beautiful. I just go sit when I need to recharge.

My life…

Is insane. I’ve had so many awesome opportunities in the last 3 years it’s incredible, especially after so many hard years. It’s also insanely busy. Sometimes these days I feel like I need someone just to run my social media. This is new for me and it simultaneously scares and excites me. I’m generally a pretty private person and it’s taken a lot of effort to open up glimpses of my life to others. Every day I have to make a point to be sure I replied to everything on my phone from that day. To be honest, I do not even have wifi in my home. I wouldn’t trade any of this though.

I’m currently working on…

my Phoenix Fashion Week showcase on March 21st and my collection for Tiesha Harrison’s ArTwist event on May 9th. I am also helping some fellow creative’s plan their own shows!

Always…

stand up for what you feel is right, keep fighting, keep pushing, take mental health breaks, and compliment people even when you’re nervous to do so

Never…

judge without first trying to understand, settle for less than you deserve, get comfortable being an underdog, let others dictate what you can and cannot do, forget those who rode for you, forget to tag fellow creatives on projects, allow yourself to be used, or judge people for their resting face 😉

Favorite Quote…

“May your heart remain breakable, but never by the same hand twice” It’s a quote by one of my favorite women, and I love it and need to remember to live by it so much that have it tattooed in my best friend’s handwriting 😉

Biggest Dream…

to walk in LA/NY/Paris fashion week or style them along with having my styling published in Vogue. My biggest dream of all though is to just simply be paid and make a living off of fashion and doing what I love.

My Pet Peeve(s)…

I’m going to sound so petty. Bad spelling and grammar. When I don’t have nails and my eyebrows and lashes turn back to so blonde they’re undetectable. People who can’t answer more than one question via text at a time. When something is wrong with my food. People who think a stylist is the same thing as a designer or hair/makeup artist. Racism, transphobia, general intolerance for other people’s innocent lifestyle choices. Having to wake up early. People who misspell my first name and mispronounce my middle (Leigh-its pronounced Lee). Bullies. The biggest, however, is those who support you only as long as you are not doing better than them.

More about Randi…

I got my start in fashion when I enrolled in The Art Institute of Phoenix for Fashion Design. I was halfway through my degree when it closed in 2018. I have volunteered and worked at F.A.B.R.I.C., a local fashion incubator, for going on three years as an event/fashion show/ model coordinator.

I worked as the model coordinator for a fashion show featuring past Project Runway designers, and have also worked as staff for many outside shows, including dressing for Scottsdale Fashion Week two years in a row. I have done wardrobe styling for Nike and Luxe & City to name a few. I model myself, and have walked for Mac Viva Glam, appeared in Gothesque Magazine in 2017, walked for Dillard’s, and was also featured on Channel 3 news for an on-air fashion show.

I am also a runway coach, the Secretary of the Board for Fashion Group International Arizona Chapter, and was featured in Voyage Magazine in April 2019. Most recently in January 2020, I won Stylist of the Year in Luxe & City’s styling competition under the name Mozzerati, which has been my pseudonym for a few years now. I see Mozzerati as another version of myself.
